They use a jewlers rouge. You can warp the optics if done wrong.
Actually, its called 'cerium oxide'. You make a paste out of it and use a felt wheel and if you get to agressive, yes, you will distort the windshield.
You were very lucky to find a professional shop to tackle this. As I've mentioned I had my scratched windshield looked at by 3 different shops and they all backpedaled on touching it once they saw it was a classic vette.
One mobile guy pulled in the driveway wound down his window and as he was putting his van in reverse said, "No way am I touching that car!" and left.
As bad as distorting the windshield may be if you overheat the glass while polishing it then the jig is up....it will crack for sure...
Eastwood sells a kit that I've had sitting around for a few weeks. I've got a sandblasted and wiper scratched windshield on my '65 that I'm going to try it on. If it doesn't work, I'll replace the windshield...
