Default Pulling the trigger

In the next few days I will be buying a crate engine and will retire my matching number 300 horse engine afer 45+ years of faithful service.

I am going for the ZZ383 Crate Engine 425HP. I live in northern Italy and hope to be able to group together all the parts in one shot so freight doesn't get out of hand.

My Vert is a 1965 300 horse/four speed with a BB hood.

I have a few questions, hopefully someone can chime in.

1. I hope to be able to swap over my original power steering unit - will it match up?

2. In these last months I started to get some clutch slippage so I will order a new clutch. What parts should I order besides the clutch disk? I know it is a Muncie standard - what model number would it be? I was also asked the number of spines.

I will go for a new distributor, in order to keep my original tach, which model should I go for?

I will also order a new fan unit since mine is the original. Again, model imput?

I will also order a pair of sidepipes from Allen's Famous Side Pipes - will there be issue clearance issues with the stock P.S. unit?

Thank you all very much.

Alex

For the clutch set-up, you need a clutch disk, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and pilot bushing. Do a search on this forum for detailed information on the proper throw-out bearing and pilot bushing. You want the right all-bronze bushing. I believe your Muncie is a 10-spline, but someone here will have to confirm that.

There are several tach-drive distributors out there. Several people here seem to prefer the Mallory.

no clearance issues with sidepipes and stock P/S

the clutch could be a 26 or 10 spline, no real way of telling until you pull the clutch

your original dist will work just fine in the crate motor, if it is in good condition re-use it.

if the orig fan clutch is good, there is no harm in reusing it, if your fear the clutch is bad, just get a new clutch.

will need
flywheel i believe because of the one pc oil pan has a diff crank end
short water pump- will have to grind the timing chain cover a little to bolt on pass side
use old dist or buy a new one with tach drive
use the same type fan and fan clutch
everything should hook up. jim

My engine guy was just saying that all those GM crate motors are now made in Mexico and are not even close to correct in the build dept. He just pulled down a brand new 502 GM crate and had to rebuild it to make it on-spec. 5k more $....

You can tell I'm not a mechanic from the question I will ask below -

[QUOTE=LB66383;1578132674]For the clutch set-up, you need a clutch disk, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and pilot bushing.

I want to limit the down time and since I am not sure about the spine, I was going buy all the necessary and buy the disk after I take out the motor - UPSing a disk will not break the bank.

Question; the pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and pilot bushing do not depend on the number of splines?

Thanks.

I purchased a custom built 383 with all the bells and whistles from a reputable builder and its worked out great for me so far, but I have never heard anything bad about the GM crate motors either.
