the new shifter came with an adjustment tool, and I have a diagram saying where to put it. while it neutral, it slides throun the 1&2 gear and 3&4, but not reverse. i even tried wiggling reverse and putting the tool through from under the car, didnt work. so i gave up, check if it worked, and as i expected, barely.
also, to what you said, it did do that before i replaced it ( sliding over and not up), so i took it out and accidentally broke off the divider piece between the reverse gear and the 3& 4 gear
If you've got a factory Muncie shifter for a 65/66, the adjustment tool should look like a 3-inch thin/flat steel plate. If you've got under-car exhaust that can complicate things but even with side exhaust like I have on my 65 and 66 Coupes, I found the steel plate was a bit too long to use so I bent it to suit. That long portion is a little less than 2 1/4 inches in length. Having that end hooked also makes it easier to grab too, pic below. Are you disconnecting all the rods to the shift levers when you use this tool?

ok. yeah i have that tool. and yeah, it is striaght piped si its a b$tch, haha. it would slide in for me, but just the 1st two, not all the way to reverse. and yeah i had everything connected. connected and in neutral
Sounds like you might have the 1-2 and 3-4 rods fairly close to where they belong but try disconnecting the reverse rod and then manipulate the adjustment tool so it captures all three and then bring back up the reverse rod and either lengthen or shorten it to suit the location of the shift lever.

ok, and i did manipulate the reverse link while sliding the tool through, i feel like the actual shifter is in the way, metal piece moving the gears

Throw the tool in the garbage and have somebody pull the shifter to the left while you adjust the clevis on the reverse shift rod. Take it one way or the other until the handle easily goes into the reverse gate. Dragging the shift lever back and forth, left right, it should go smoothly without any bumping up and down.
The clevis is where the shift rod fastens to the reverse lever. That's the adjustment.
If all the forward gears are right and the shift handle is centered in the console opening, you don't need that tool to align the reverse adjustment. Just adjust it where it will go into reverse. It's that simple.
Ok, Ill give it a shot after work, thanks guys. its just so hard to get it over now, if my bench goes under 230lbs i feel i wont be able to move it hahaha
so i hope you two are right
As far as I understood it, the POSITION of the three rods must be in right place to allow free cross-movement of the lever.
If the rods are only disconnected they are not necessarily in the right position.
But I'm an asker and open to advices
