I just read in Motor Trend steps for winter storage article that placing moth ***** on the cars interior would keep mice out of the cars interior. Wont moth ***** leave a foul ordor in your car come spring time.

No. Mothballs sublimate and once that process ends, the aroma is gone.
I have had huge problems with mice getting into my RV over the Winter months. Moth ***** or dryer sheets did not work. What DID work at keeping them out was Peppermint Oil. Smells like a Candy Cane.
The moth ball smell will go away in a few hours after you take the car out and roll down the windows.
I put moth ***** in and around my car every year. I hope it helps. Although one year the little b*stards pushed my moth ***** aside in order to make room for their acorns. I found the moth ***** and the acorns side by side on and in the frame rails.
I was told, (and the guy swears by it) that "Irish Spring" soap bars works great.....just cut a few bars into chunk size pieces, and put them all around the car. It keeps the critters away and it also smells good when your ready to open it up next season......I'm gonna give it a try this year!!

You might also try one of those ultra sonic pest devices that emit a VERY high pitched noise, runs on a small AC adapter. Put it in the car, windows up. Mine at the cottage works well for the for mice and bugs. About 20$
Moth *****, Irish Spring, fabric softener dryer sheets, Fresh Cab, peppermint oil, fox urine, ultrasonic repeller, poison, traps, etc. I use them all.
I was going to say the only sure thing is the car bag. That was until I put my car in it last week. When I unfolded it, I found the little b*stards had chewed into it in 2 places. I didn't notice that when I put it away last year. Now I think the only sure thing is a cat.
(How do you know the you-can't-hear-it-only-the-critters-can pest repllers are working? What a racket!)

It's kind of like prescription medication for a cold - you take the meds, you get better, you infer a cause and effect but you can't prove that you would not have gotten better had you not taken the meds.
All I know about mice is that we put mothballs into our 71 while in storage, and mice stayed away. Could have been because of the mothballs, or maybe there was a fat free-range cat in the area. Don't know.
Fortunately I haven't had to deal with rodents as I drive mine every few days. lol.. With that being said last winter when I started up the Cobra I saw a head down in one of the hinge areas... I closed the garage up and set two traps with some peanut butter on them and presto in an hour I had the little bastard.. lol
Dave
Oh forgot to mention much like Jeff we have a few outdoor cats that my wife feeds. She's happy because she likes seeing the little fluffy bastards and I'm happy because they keep the mice population down.. WIN WIN..

Hitch... how much does it cost your wife to feed that little fluffy bastard cat of yours? I wouldn't want to see the big cat if you call this little...

do the mice smell like a gloroius irish morning?? how do you fit a mouse sized shower in the car??
Trap the suckers until Winter is in full swing and you won't have any mice top worry about.
Every year I put down traps and catch a couple in the first few weeks of Oct. Then I just keep one set for the rest of the Winter and I don't usually catch any more. I guess they have all found a place to live out the cold by then.
The thing that works the best is a 5 gal bucket that has 5" water in the bottom and a soda can on a stick covered with peanut butter. The mouse will try to get the peanut butter and fall in the bucket and drown. Make sure you use water in the bucket, or they will jump out.
The smell of moth ***** lasts forever in an old car. Just like cigarette smoke. The first hot day it will come back. When I look at a car for sale if I smell moth ***** I walk away.It absorbs into everything. At least you can replace the headliner to get rid of cigarette smoke smell. Dave

Use a 50/50 mix of antifreeze with a couple inches of water and it will perfectly preserve the little critters until spring. Good for those storage places that you don't check daily and no smell from the unlucky ones. Dave
As someone suggested buy a car bag and forget the mothballs, tea leaves, and blessings from the Dali Lama. In the spring, the car comes out of the bag in the same clean condition as when it went in. About $200.00. Amortize that cost over fifteen years and it is probably equal to the cost of gas, running to the store to purchase any manner of products related to pest control.
