Default Muncie sidecover differences

What is the difference between the 3884685 sidecover that is on my 65 Muncie and the 3831707 that is suppose to be on it? Should I change to a 3831707 if I can find one? I do understand that these numbers are not judged.

Thanks for your input.

The 1707 side cover ('63-'65) used shifter shafts with 5/16"-18 studs where the shift levers attached; the 4685 cover ('66-'68) used shifter shafts with 3/8"-24 studs (and different shift levers).

.... And (most visible) the pin that holds the "scissors" detent cams has a wider "nail head" shape on the '685'.

Any reason to change to the correct 1707 sidecover? Or, will the 4685 function and judge the same?

It'll work fine, and transmission "numbers" aren't judged.

And if for no other reason, I wouldn't change it. The early pins without the shoulders could/would work themselves inside the transmission and you can imagine what happened next.

AMEN!! That happened to me a couple months ago. The good new? I got schooled on how to rebuild a Muncie and replaced the press in pin with a nail head one (direct replacement) so I won't have THAT happen again.
