On my 64 can i replace the radio speaker from the top by removing the grate (cover?). Does the grate just snap in?

Nope - not unless someone has cut out part of the dash.

Still have to unbolt it from underneath.

If you pull the 2 panels on either side of the console, you can reach up with a nut driver and remove the nuts. Be patient and you'll get there, at first it seems impossible.

With patience you can get it. A light helps too.
I have a problem with my speaker grill sticking up in the front. Don't know how to pull it down flush with the console/dash without bending it. The screws are tight and the hold down clips are in place. How do you guys get it to fit flush?

Aren't they all like that? It seems like everyone I've seen has been. I studied mine years ago when I had it out aand deccided trying to do something about it wasn't worth the effort.

If you lay the speaker grill on the dash without a speaker installed you'll see that it lays in there pretty flush.

The problem is that the two studs in the dash that mount the forward side of the speaker are a little too far to the rear of the car.

If you moved them forward a tad, the speaker grill would fit better.

The downside to that is that your car would no longer appear to be original.

That's the nature of the beast - we even acknowledge it in the judging guide ("fit is generally poor"). Some fit better than others - not much you can do about it.
