T10 Tailpiece
Is there a plate on the bottom of the transmission tailpiece just above the crossmember or must the tailpiece be removed in order to retreave the speedometer gear? The speedometer gear fell down inside the tailpiece when trying to get it out.

To remove the speedo gear, the VERY LEAST you can hope for is to remove the tranny from the car and tilt it in such a manner so as to get it to drop over to the hole so that you can grasp it with needle nose pliers.
Next, remove the tail housing.
Assuming the gear is the nylon or plastic version, i'd just leave it and install a new one. The hardened gears are much stronger than the plastic gear!

I was hoping what appeared to be above the crossmember was a plate. No luck. I can still feel the end with my finger. Maybe I'll try dumdum on the end of my finger. I used to be good at fishing in my younger days.

Curved-jaw medical hemostats are great for retrieving lost speedo gears :D
