Obvious Restamp
.
Perhaps an engine builder redoes old blocks, and just puts the stamps on that are specific to that blocks casting but common to all of them or at least a wide range of them. A less than ethical car builder would probably pay a premium for blocks from that builder, knowing he could order the right block with the proper "suffix", to fill in the rest to match his car.
I don't know if this is possible(The numbers he IS putting on would have to be VERY generic, so the block becomes "right" to the largest number of potential client cars possible. Otherwise, it would seem he would be better off doing full numbers to order). Heck, it may not even be what the poster was suggesting. It's just the only way I see that the assertion "works", as my opinion also agrees with your opinion that the re-stamping would appear to be an "all or nothing" type of thing. Either everything came off and was re-stamped(according to the assertion, at two different times), or nothing came off and was re-stamped, if the 1st numbers are original.
For an idiot with no dog in this fight, have I added enough extra confusion yet?(seeing how my intention was to "clear up" what I thought was the misunderstanding...

Back to the 63. The guy said he had it extensively checked out by Corvettes Unlimited and they believe it's the original drive train. He did say "The fenders and hood and support you mention were replaced at some point in the car's life." So it's been damaged at some point. From the pictures it a nice looking car, It's a 63 split window, the guy wants mid to high 60's. Not out of the question.....I haven't found a nice 63 for less.
