Default Steering Box question

I just pulled the steering box out of my 1966 vert. It is covered with caked on oil and crap. I think the seals are going in it but I am not sure.

I have been scrubbing the outside simply to get it clean enough to handle and work on without coating everything in a layer of grease.

I am thinking about soaking it in a 5 gallon bucket with some degreaser, like I said I think the seals are going. Would soaking it be a horrible idea and just about guarantee I need to rebuild it?

Any input is appreciated

Don't soak it - the seals may be OK.
