When I repainted the engine bay I also replaced the battery holder, the old one was correoded. It is a 327 car with the tray on the passenger side. Is the negative or positive on the engine side? Thanks. Alex

Usually any car I work on the cables are only long enough and formed from years in a way as to make it pretty easy to tell. But the guys will let you know the "correct" way.

The positive goes on the engine side, the negative to the fender side.
BUT.................
There are 2 battery configurations. For the "correct" Corvette configuration, both posts are closest to the firewall.
It is "safer" to put the positive toward the fenderwell and negative next to the engine. Then the fender and expansion tank protect the positive from shorting out should you drop something in the engine bay.
It is pretty easy to bridge the terminal next to the engine to something metal when you reach in with a big azzed screwdriver or wrench. It's better that this terminal be negative and not short out when you do.
It is also far easier to reach the cut-off switch (that mounts on the negativer terminal) in this position.
