A beautiful Sunday in Colorado. I thought it would be a great time to change the oil under the big tree that grows by my driveway. Finished up with the change, then did a few more of the usual tinkerings, probably took about an hour. When I closed the hood, right away I say two 50 cent piece size dark spots in the paint. To the touch, they were much hotter then the rest of the hood. Usually, when I work out side the garage, I remember to put a rag over the air cleaner, but this time the beautiful day may have made me lazy. The sun had reflected off the top of the air cleaner lid, and heated up the paint from the under side. The dark did fade, but there is a wave to the paint when you look from a low angle. I guess it could have been worse. Hope my screw up can save someone else from a bad day.
Here's a picture of the air cleaner cover my wife designed and her mother made for the '64. (wife likes to keep her distance from a sewing machine ;))
She made it last spring. No need for it today as it warmed up to 45 degees.

At my first flight judging I saw all of these cars with rags over the chrome and walked around scratching my head until someone told me what they were doing. I thought they were being overzealous but it sounds like it could really be a problem. Thanks for the heads-up.

Re: Sun Caution reminder (Red64)
Pat,
Sorry to hear of your experience. Thanks for bringing it to everyones attention. I saw the same thing happen about ten years ago and my wife made a cover that we have used ever since. It's also a good idea to check the reflection from the door mirror.
