64 powerglide corvette. . Reversing lights don't work. I've got reversing lights with bulbs in them, but no backing lights. Car doesn't have a night and day rear view mirror, so perhaps it never came with reversing lights - but if so why does it have clear rear lenses with bulbs in them?
Can anybody advise the location of the reversing light switch please ?

I had a similar question a while back, here is a good write up showing neutral safety & backup light switch for the P/G on my '65, hopefully the '64 is the same. John V passed this along to me: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c1-a...-question.html

There were no optional night and day rear view mirrors available in '63 and '64 Corvettes according to the ncrs judging guide. There were only original production equipment mirrors available.

On a '64, the (optional) backup light switch is part of the Powerglide neutral safety switch, which is mounted on the left front of the transmission case - see your Assembly Manual, section M35, sheets 5.00, 6.00, and 7.00. If the car didn't have backup lights (RPO T86, a stand-alone option), the neutral safety switch has two wires; backup light cars used a different switch (photo below) with four wires (two are for the backup lights).
In addition, taillights were often replaced because they pitted early on. Lenses were even easier to replace, and anyone wanting to change their look could put clear ones on in about 2 minutes.
I crawled under the car and took a picture of what I think is the neutral safety switch. This is located at the drivers side rear of the engine block. The shiny black pan is the torque converter cover.
This switch has two purple wires running into it, and two black wires (black with red trace, black with green trace). There is no rod at all connecting to the gearbox or shifter linkage.
Is this the neutral safety switch with the switch lever and linkage rod missing ?
And if it is missing what are my options? - I understand this switch etc is not available.
I have to have a neutral safety switch to pass a road safety inspection.
Yes, unfortunately, the lever and rod is totally gone! As you can see from JohnZ's photo. It must have broken or rusted out at the shaft somehow.
If the switch is still functional you may be able to fabricate something to get it to work. I'd remove the switch & test it for function. It looks like there may be enough of the shaft there. See if it turns. If it does then maybe fabricate a lever. Maybe drill and tap what's left of the shaft and attach the lever with a screw. You can get the rod & clevis from most suppliers.
......Or search for a switch but as you know they are hard to come by. Four years ago I paid about $350 for one for our 63 PG coupe. That was no backup lights either, just NS.

Thanks for the advice. Had a crack at working on the switch but couldn't get the shaft to move (there's nothing left of the shaft to work with). I've purchased a 63 Impala SS powerglide neutral safety switch, looks very similar (and may be identical), I reckon I'll be able to get that to work.
Hmmm, good catch. I saw one online and it does look identical mechanically which makes sense. I see the Impala switch was still very costly. What looks different is the connectors on the wiring. Probably why a different part# than Corvette.
Corvette #1993359
Impala SS #1993618
The Impala uses two 2-pin connectors whereas the Corvette uses the one 4-pin connector. The NSS wires are purple on both, but the B/U light colors are different which is not a problem. Just a little rewiring of the connectors and you should be all set for inspection, and safety.
All of those switches use the same circuitry; the two purple wires are the "start" circuit, the pink wire is ignition-switched 12V, and the green wire feeds the backup lamps. The neutral safety side of the switch is closed in Park and Neutral, and the backup light side of the switch is closed in Reverse.
