Default Interior insulation

I have the body off my 64 Convertible and am currently doing major body work. It's coming along nice and quickly too.

A neighbor put a sound/heat insulation product in his truck and had tons of extra material left over. Like enough to do 2-3 of my cars. The insulation is kinda thick but it seems like it would block out just about anything. In fact, he claims his truck is now ultra quiet inside. He is offering to give me the material and I was considering putting it in the Vette when I am ready. It is made by 'Second Skin' and it is one of their top products called 'luxury liner.'

Question is...what is the thickest material I could reasonably put under my carpet and still have a nice fit when I am done?

I plan on using carpet without the jute matting. I also plan on having the carpet professionally installed so it looks as good as possible. My car is a not a numbers matching special interest show car so I am not too concerned about originality. I just want the most comfortable ride I can get for long cruises and I need it to look nice as well.

Thanks in advance for the input.

I think lou64 put sound deadening in his car when he did his interior, shoot him a PM, there were a few posts not so long ago

The thickness of this product is 1/8" which should not be a problem. However, according to the Mfg web site -

Why must I apply Luxury Liner to a foam before putting it on top of my automotive vibration mat?
We recommend applying Luxury Liner on top of a closed cell foam like our Overkill Pro, because the foam acts as a decouler, and provide a change in density that will allow the airborne sound waves to reflect off of the Mass Loaded Vinyl, away from your ears. Without the foam decoupler, a good amount of the airborne soundwaves would pass right through the vinyl and enter the cabin of the car. The foam helps to increase the resutls the vinyl is able to provide.

If you add the additional material, your total thickness is 1/4" which should still be fine. Check with your carpet installer.

Free is a good price for this expensive material so if you can make it work - great!!!

This stuff is more like 3/8 thick so maybe it is their higher end of 'luxury liner.' My plan was to put it over a thin heat barrier. Apparently, the stuff is an exceptional noise barrier but minimal at blocking heat. I have tons of extra foil type heat barrier which is 1/8 thick or so. I had some of it in the car before and it did a great job of blocking the heat but didn't do much in the sound department.

If I add them together, it would be around 1/2 inch but it would squish down a bit in areas it had to like the seats.

My thinking is that the 64 carpet kit is not molded and since there are all these little strips to glue in, it might be easier to get away with thicker material underneath as long as a pro does the final carpet install. I'm sure a molded carpet would no longer fit properly if I went that route.

I'll shoot a PM to lou64 - Thanks

I have used the Fatmat and the 3/8 insulation.. The Fatmat will not absorb water and does a great job at blocking and sealing the heat from the passenger compartment. While the insulation that you describe works.. It also absorbs water and anyone that has owned a midyear for a while knows eventually you will have water in the passenger compartment.. It is just a matter of time.. So I try to eliminate any thing that can hold water and cause mold..

Just my .02..
