Which of the 4 tail lights are supposed to light up on a '67 when:
1. The brakes are applied?
2. The turn signal is on?
3. The headlights are on?
Also, can a defective turn signal switch affect the operation of the brake lights so that they sometimes operate, sometimes don't, and sometimes stay on when the car is parked?
I went through a long process of sorting out the turn signal switch on my 67. My brake lights were intermittent, my emergency flashers would come on while driving, and my turn signals would quit at odd times. In the end, I traced everything to a bad turn signal switch. If you look at the wiring diagram, the brake lights, turn signals, and flashers all go through the switch. My car has the telescopic wheel, so a new switch was really hard to find. I found one from Corvette Central and went through the painful process of putting it in. It worked great for almost two months and all of the problems came back. I replaced it with another "imported" switch and had the same experience. After two years of dealing with cheap repo replacement switches, I finally found a new old stock switch. It sounds like you have the same problem that I had and I would suggest that you avoid the cheap repo switches. The problems seem to be in the manufacturing quality. There are a lot of connections in the switch and it does not take much for things to get shorted out. I have heard that the big problem is in how tight you get the mounting screws. Too tight and you distort the cheap material that the new ones are made from. I was aware of this and still had problems. My advice is to start looking for a quality replacement switch. Avoid the "imported" models.
Doc - I'm sure my problem must be the same as what you describe. I forgot to mention that sometimes the 4-way flashers don't work on mine either. Anyway, the car is in the shop getting that and some other things done. They traced the lighting problem to the turn signal, found one (I presume US made) at a Chevy dealer in Wisconsin yesterday and it's winging it's way to FL as we speak. Should have the car back Tuesday or Wednesday.
