I posed this in the parts section and think I may be missing responses due to the WTB heading, so I'll try again here.
I was poking around some of the parts vendors today and it appears that the same power steering pump was used from 63-74 for high performance engines. Can anyone confirm this? Also, our pump has the numbers 3608 RE on it, but I haven't had any luck decoding that. Does anyone know what it means or what number we need for our applicaton? We're working on a 365hp '64.

Thanks in advance,

Power steering wasn't available on the 365hp engine, as it used the 6-quart (system) oil pan which interfered with the power cylinder (and with the steering stabilizer on manual-steering cars). Power steering in '64 was only available with the 250hp and 300hp engines.
If you have a pump, brackets, hoses, control valve and cylinder that bolts on your engine, it'll probably work okay or at least it will have some amount of assist. But, it may not be right.
There are differences in those Saginaw pumps as they were used on many different GM cars and even some Fords. One difference is the relief valve in the pump.
On the control valve, the Corvette valves look just like the ones used on the Chevy II but works on different pressure. I think there's a X marked on the end cap on one and something else on the other to ID them. I don't remember which is which. Like the pump, I believe the control valve was used on other GM vehicles.

Really?? That's disheartening...and intersting that I hadn't come across that little tidbit before. Now I'm wondering what other issues we'll find once we stuff our new 365 horse engine in the bay.
There is a pulley difference at least for the L-79 option and maybe the LT1 C3s. The pulley was deeper on the pump with the hopes of keeping the belt on as the engines wound up in RPMs. Jerry
