I am mounting a good stereo head elsewhere in my '65. I was going to just leave the original in the hole but I am now considering removing the "Heavy Lump" altogether. It may make things easier working under dash as well. If so I would need something to fill the hole. Too bad these cars don't have a "Radio Delete" plate. Any other idea's to do with the radio hole?
It's true the factory radio can be in the way of under dash work, but the dash looks correct/complete with it or another unit in place. Filling the space is only limited by your imagination. I would just leave it in place. After all, how often are you digging into the dash? Dennis
Thanks Dennis, of course you're right but I am kicking around ideas. Still thinkin' about it. I am under the dash occasionally. Maybe I'll make my own Delete plate, that'll get some rumors going.... Any other thoughts [no cutting]?
Frank
Here's a thought and it's quite a stretch. Take cardboard, place it at the backside of the opening and trace the outline of the opening. Take it to a sheet metal shop (small aluminum piece) and see if they can roll the edge so it protrudes through the opening the same thickness as the fiberglass. Paint it to match, attach it from behind with a strong adhesive. Hole plugs would be needed for the radio **** holes. Dennis
Well, I'm sort of in the same quandary, although I plan on having NO (working) stereo/radio. My intention is to remove the radio speaker and have the windshield-edge of the remaining grille hinged, so I can mount a GPS inside, and lift it up for (occasional) use; it'll be held open with a simple L-shaped hinge. My "idea" on the radio is to talk to one of the radio guys about just using the face/*****/buttons of the stock radio as a dummy faceplate, which will be hinged to open and access a storage compartment BEHIND it...
Prolly gonna take some $ to do so, but there ya' go...
What about something liker the Custom Autosound units that fit in the same hole ? I would think something that looks somewhat original and having cd changer would be best of both worlds.
There are those that will gut your old, original radio and replace it's internals with modern components, even MP3/iPod upgrades, etc.. Best of both worlds..
Plenty of folks here have done this - do a search...

Thanks Dennis and Ganz, you're putting some thought into this ... How about some James Bond kinda spy stuff? Post some pics of your hinged speaker grille.
I don't need to do a search, plenty of info on those secret audio and others ... and plenty of reports of low quality, having to pull them out and send back, short life or just plain poor low end performance. I'm going with higher end components.
