Default 66 wheels

Thinking of buying new knock-off style wheels for my car, a birthday present to myself. Since all my knock-off wheel experience is limited to Jag wheels, I need advice/suggestions. I've read that true Corvette knock-off wheels are somewhat problematic and bolt-on versions are preferred, is that really true? Who makes/sells the best looking/constructed replica wheels for a '66? My car is a nice driver and not all original so I can go either way on the knockoff vs. bolt-on wheel type (they both seem to look the same once they're on the car, at least that's the way it looks in pictures I've seen). While price is always a concern, I don't want to go solely on price and not get the best overall wheels. Please let me know your thoughts/suggestions.

Why go with the original style knock off? They are fake anyway not like the Jag wheels where the knock off attaches directly to the axle. The original style have a stub that bolts to the original lug bolts. The knock off is then attached to the bolted on stub. They are a gimmick IMHO. I have the bolt on "knock off" style wheels. They look to me identical to the "real" ones.

I think with the problematic knock off's specially when you have a flat or rotate etc...and loosning up the bolt on 67 style called Starburst are the way to go...new ones bout $ 2200 and some times on the forum here you can find nice used ones for $900 er so ...there may be some posted on the Forum PARTS section not to far back
Or you post want to buy Star burst wheels w/ center caps and you will need the special
lugnuts for that applicationt

They cost the same and look the same. The true knockoffs are a little more technique dependent and must be installed correctly. The bolt-ons are simply bolt on and add cone and spinner. If I were buying new, I go with bolt ons. You won't have to buy a lead hammer and beat on the spinners to take them off. I have knock offs and disagree that they are in any way "fake", but I'd still buy bolt ons if buying new.

Real K-H knock-off will go for at least $5k a set. I would go with nice repro, they indeed look the same.
The true K-H are kinda cool though: I like hammering the hell out of the spinner with the lead hammer to pop off the wheel. The repro usually have a locking pin inside the spinner that needs to be removed b4 u can lose the spinner.

Don't put the 67 starbursts on a 66. Get the correct ones. Volvette in Knoxville and Virginia Vettes and maybe Willcox Corvette sells choice of knock off or bolt on for the 66 for around $2200 and sometimes on sale if you go new. I bought a used set of knockoffs for my 65 with redline tires and shipping included last year for $1300 from a nice gentleman in Florida.

I went wtih the bolt-on versions from Dick at Virginia Vette. He really took good care of me - from a pricing and service perspective.

if I were buying, it would be the bolt ons......... not worth beating the spinner with the hammer if you don't have to

For safety reasons and to keep my KH knock offs from damage/wear, I removed my original KH ko's and put on bolt-ons from VV. Very few can tell the difference. With that said, real knock offs put on correctly are safe, I have 5 in very good condition to sell if you decide to go with them.
