Patience guys. I know this is a popular thread but can't find the solution. The installed driver's side LED light works fine on my 59. (tail light) Current to the passenger's side drops to 3 volts with this LED on. This wasn't a problem using the two filament 1157 bulbs.
The LED kit is Pilot ROJO 5050 SUPER bright LEDS and it did come with a different socket that I finally used. (Also fits bulbs 2057 and 7528.) Ground wires are good. Auto Zone said I was good to go with this kit--just plug and play. I'm driving a 200 mile trip Saturday and I want better taillights. Thanks for any suggestions 59 navy
I've been trying to find the LED strip you're using on line. Can you post a link. It sounds like an internal wiring problem in the LED strip. LEDs draw so little current that there isn't any good reason to have only 3 volts on the passenger side socket. You might try rechecking the voltage with the LED strip disconnected.
Good suggestion. With the LED Disconnected, I get good voltage to both tail lights Put the LED back in and the voltage to P/S drops to 3 volts. 59 navy
Put the original bulbs back in and see what happens...if it is OK...then it is in your LED stuff. If the voltage drops when you re-install the original bulbs again...check your fuse at the fuse panel to see if you are getting a voltage drop through the fuse due to crap, dust, rust, etc on the fuse terminals.
I agree with Avispa...LED's draw much less current and you should not have a problem....unless there is an internal problem with them.
Test the LED's out of the car using wires from the battery and bench test it and check it there.
If for any reason you can't get the LED issue sorted out in time for tomorrow, you can replace the 1157s with 2357s (available at just about every car parts store) and get a slightly brighter stop/turn signal. The dim filament will be the same as the 1157s.
For the longer term, I've been really happy with these:
After reading your replies to my problem with LED tail lights and trying all of your tips, I narrowed it down to a poor ground. Even though I've got this car double grounded (fuel sending unit, horns...)I soldered a ground wire to the outside of both light sockets. Grounded these wires and lights came on brighter than I expected. I'll take that trip to Columbia, SC tomorrow. Thanks for the help! 59 navy
