For steel wheels I believe it is about 3.75".

Did you have to make any modifications to fit the 17s?

No I have a 63. I installed wilwood disc brakes on the front and have no problem with wheels. I installed 65 trailing arms and used gm parts for the rear calipers, etc. and my rear wheels contact the caliper. Looking for a new set that fits all around.

My 65 is a J61 car. I converted the front to disk left the rear drums. I have no problems with 17" wheels 4 " backspace and 225/55/17 tires.
