Had the similar lifter tic sound, was an exhaust leak on the manifold. Of course on the side with the alternator and coolant hoses. Even at that, only a couple hour job.

Back the bolts about half way out, then pull the manifold back. If there are remnants of old gaskets, you may have to pull the bolts out and move the manifold out more to clean the surfaces.

If no gaskets, just drop the new gaskets in. They have "ears" so they capture the bolts. Spray some high temp gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket if you like.

Anti-sieze the bolts, torque, French lock, good to go!

That sounds like the way to go. Much easier than installing new lifters. I'll tell ya that if it is an exhaust leak I'll be surprised because is sure sounds like a lifter to me. There are no gaskets between the head and manifold. Maybe it’s time to put one in, and then I'll know.

I've been following this thread since I've also been hearing a bit of lifter tick (hydraulics) for the past couple years. Nothing real loud mind you, just enough to be annoying. I had some MMO hangin' around since I used to use it in my old H-D's. So I added a half a quart to the oil and a few ounces to the gas tank. Now maybe I'm fooling myself, but I'll be damned if my valve train doesn't seem to sound better. Now I'm wondering if I should use some at every oil change.

Seems to me you're being too hard on yourself.

It's either an exhaust leak or it isn't. I think someone above suggested to cut off a piece off garden hose, put one end at your ear and the other end down my the manifold and LISTEN! If you had a helper that could put the car in gear, hold the brake and slightly load the engine with the clutch, that would be even better as your "exhaust leak" would get louder. A lifter won't.

If it’s an exhaust leak wont it be present all the time? whereas if it’s a lifter it might not make any noise until the oil becomes hot and thinner.

Maybe, maybe not. If you know what you're listening for, it'd take about two seconds to diagnose the problem. Unfortunealtly, I can't hear your engine from here.

Just a thought, I have experienced a similar tick and did everything suggested here. It was a broken fuel pump arm spring that allowed the fuel pump rod to make the tapping noise against the cam lobe just like a lifter. Good spring keeps the fuel pump rod ridding on the lobe, hence, no clearance for the tapping noise to occur.

Exhaust ticks can come and go. My 2006 Durango has one when cold but when things heat up and expand it disappears...

Default Update update

O.K.

Here’s the update. I was en route to the service garage today in order to get his opinion on my tick. Well I didn’t make it. I got rear ended by a 19 year old female who had no insurance, no job and no driver’s license …while stopped at a traffic light.I saw her coming and could not react fast enough, doesn’t it figure. The police came and gave her 2 tickets. Her fine will be about, what? $500/600. My first estimate was $6,000 and may be as high as $8500 depending what they find when they take it apart. Good thing I’m old enough to understand the value of insurance.I would post some pics, but I’m not that patient right now. Oh yah, I still have the tick.

That really, really sucks pal. No doubt she was texting or posting to TwitterFace at the time or some other such nonsense. Probably has a $600 cell phone and no insurance. Sure gets me steamed up.

I hope you can get straightened out on the repairs. Make SURE your repair garage is ready to confirm you were on the way to get work done just in case the ins company gets a little squirrely on covering your drive.

When I reported it to the Ins co that was the first thing they asked, and I was in fact going there. I did notice 2 lights back the female driver was taking pic of my car and to her credit she admitted what she had done and took full responsibility for the accident (hard to dispute the facts of a rear ending)

Wow...you don't know whether to be flattered or mad I guess.
I've had two close calls by picture takers at the rear of the split window coupe....
Good luck with the repair and don't let 'em take any short cuts...

Why were you driving for another opinion? You've had half a dozen opinions here and one of them is probably right if you'd check it out.

The insurance co is sending out an adjuster. I already told the body shop there is to be NO Chinese crap and I am extremely picky on ALL aspects of the repair and will accept nothing less than having the car as it was before the accident, not perfect but darn near. I am anticipate a fight with the adjuster, but we'll see.

Well you didn't offer to come by and diagnose the problem and second I lack the precise expertise. I still have the tick, want to stop by for lunch and then give me a diagnose?
