Default Lacquer Paint Question

Having done a total restore on my '62 in Roman red almost 28 years ago, I find that my lacquer paint is starting to bubble up in small places. I'm finding it difficult to locate lacquer paint anymore. I'm wondering if there are alternatives to respraying these areas when they are repaired.

Acrylic lacquer is still available from a few sources, although it is not quite the same as it was 28 years ago (1986). Roman red is a solid, non-mettalic color, so there should not be issues with metallic flake size.

TCP Global and Hibernia and Tower Paint are three sources……but their are many others. I would call them and see what is required to get a perfect (or almost perfect) color match. Then paint it yourself, or find an older painter. The thinners are also still around.

I always buy from TCP Global....

Their Roman Red was fine, and just ordered Turquoise for a '59 interior. The Silver Blue I got from them for our '63 was good, just a tad darker than the faded SB on the car.

If your paint is faded the new lacquer may be a bit darker.

I use the "RESTORATION SHOP PAINT".
Duracryl is very expensive.

PPG still sells some lacquer although it is probably not available in all areas.

This brings me to my question. If lacquer is not available can I spot repair on top of lacquer with single stage urethane, or two-stage base/clear?

I doubt it would work. If I haven't turned this around in my mind I think the rule was you could spray lacquer over something like enamal but enamal typically could not go over lacquer because lacquer dried by evaporation of solvents and sealing over it caused lifting, etc. Urethane is basically similar to enamel. It doesn't seem like decade old lacquer should still be venting off solvents but I believe also the reducers in urethane will react with the lacquer paint and cause further problems.

Dan, Yes I believe you flipped it 180*.....

Enamel over well cured/old lacquer is never a problem in my experiences.

Lacquer over enamel is tricky, and most often won't work. Lacquer's solvents have a tendency to lift the enamel. If the enamel has been cured for a very long time, it may be alright. Most times it will wrinkle the paint under it.

However, I have had good luck in some cases with lacquer over enamel. When I restore C1 steering columns, I prep/prime then paint with Acrylic Enamel(I use Dupli-Color semi-gloss black). Then after a week or more of enamel cure time, I use my TCP Global acrylic lacquer for the top column color to match the interior fiberglass pieces.(kick panels, pkg tray, etc) I don't lay it on too heavy, and use minimal thinner to keep the bleeding into the enamel to a minimum. Never a wrinkle to date.

Rich

Afraid of that - that "CRS" thing kicking in again. Thanks for the correction.

I should have remembered that some of the early BC/CC systems were basically just a lacquer BC with a urethane CC over the top - Duh!
