I'm doing some detailing of the engine compartment on my '57. I have a simple question. What bears the weight of the front of the engine? The reason I am asking is that I want to remove the bolts on the front engine mount bracket and some of the bolts on the front engine mounts.
I was under the impression that the water pump acts as part of the front engine mounts also.

The stamped steel motormount bracket that's sandwiched between the water pump and the block carries the engine's weight; there are four bolts (two on each side) that go through the ends of the water pump, through the motormount bracket, into tapped holes in the front of the block. You can't remove any of those four bolts unless you have the engine supported from underneath.

Thanks, John. I suspected that might be the case. When I replaced the water pump on my '61, that should have made it obvious. Then I assume the bolts on the front engine mount bracket are there to stabilize the engine.

If you mean the single large bolt on each end of the motormount bracket where the rubber cushions are, those two cushions carry the weight of the engine and stabilize/locate it.
