Hey guys.. Maybe you can help. I found a 63 split window for sale and was wondering what you think the value should be.
It was originally white with red interior ,4 speed no air. It is now black on black. 18 year old home restoration. It has a replacement 327 and hasnt been moved or started in 7 years. Im sure it will need brakes, battery, carb rebuild, fuel system ,tires ect... interior shows wear. just faded and dingy. The exterior is the same. 18 years old. What do you think would be a fair price to offer him. I just want to be fair with the guy so it works on both ends. thanks ! Steve
I'm sure FtF would qualify his estimates by stating if and only if there is no serious frame or birdcage rot. If you don't know where and how to look for these, search the archives. Things can get very ugly if the birdcage needs repair.
You also want to make sure the VIN tag and Trim tags are original and properly attached. White with a red office is a great combo. Black over black is nice too, but you will spend 10 to 15 K to get back original and you can use this as a lever on the price. Depending on the engine, a restored car will push 100K. You can easily spend 50K to get there even if you do a lot of the work yourself.
I can't see it being worth less than sixty if all the trim is there, I don't care if the frame is shot. People are hunting big time for straight SWC bodies.

Of course -- a bad birdcage/frame is a deal killer... If its an NOM car and the black/black isn't awful you could save a ton of money by leaving it alone. A respray will be $10K-$15K (as stated above -- assuming no major body work) and the interior redo will cost $2K-$5K depending on condition of existing parts and how good you are with spray dye.
Not long ago a '63 body went for $35K for a restomod on eBay. I thought it was crazy money at the time....maybe not...

63's in that form are pushing 50K to high 50k's. Even with the wrong engine/paint.
Real junk/basket cases are going for 35-40k. We all wish we could buy one for 35-45k but those prices have passed.
Dont confuse what you rember them going for a few years ago or how u passed on one for 45k because you thought that was crazy. Get in line or talk about the one that got away.
How much work do you want to do on your own? With so many unknowns, shooting from the hip- The way you describe it I feel it's worth 50k, never letting a few thousand keep me from a car I want. Pretty much what Frankie said.
I would not pay 60k for a garden variety SWC with rot as has been suggested. That's just me.
A 63 Corvette has a lot of pretty features, as other years do. The mystique of the actual "split" itself always make me shake my head when I see the premium they bring.

Men have been mesmerized by splits since the dawn of time.

No more than the washboard hood and trunk irons on a '58.
One year only, unique features command a premium; a large one in some cases

The mystique has reached absurd levels. When I was fueling my roofless roadster last summer, a guy asked me what year it is. When I responded, his eyes lit up and he said, "A split window coupe?!??!"

Funny thing is.... Im selling my 58 to make room for the 63! I was born in 63 and have always wanted one. Its time. Will be a keeper. Thanks !
I wanted one since I was six in 1966 when our family was behind a 63 Coupe on our way to A&P to do the family shopping. It was like seeing a space ship with wheels! When I was 29 it happened 35 hundred miles from home.
Hope it works out for you! Post some pictures!

I bought a 1957 Dodge Coronet partly because it is my birth year. When I recieved my IBM build card from Chrylser Historical Society I was pleased to learn it was actual manufactured on the same day I was born.

I remember A&P food stores, we had them here in Baltimore.
Back in the mid sixties if I was a good boy my Mother would buy me animal crackers if I didn't drive her crazy at the A&P store, great memories. Most times I drove her crazy. :-)
Once we went to a Korvette Department store when I was a kid-thought I'd see another 63 but no such luck. I went to that A&P to help my mom (she couldn't believe I wanted to go food shopping) hoping to get behind that 63 again-but no. After I bought the 63 in 1989 I put it in my moms garage and she told her friends "I have a Chevette sitting in my garage".
In my heart of hearts I want a '63 SWC, from my childhood dreams until now. But then I realize -- drum brakes, everything in a '63 is unique to that year, and poor visibility rearwards. I guess what I want is a '67 SWC that I can see out of.
