Lots of posts/information on restoration of the dash on here. Do a search here for Krylon and SEM black paint numbers to get the correct gloss. Not sure what you mean by the plastic cover on the cluster though.

I think he mixed up some words between the cluster and the door. I think the glove box door he has is for a '63. The face of the silver area should have a clear plastic type surface. Polishing it by some means should get rid of the scratches. Reproduction doors are made by Trim Parts and run about $470. Dennis

I mean the frame that goes around the instrument panel that is held on by screws.

that's called the instrument cluster panel. The individual gauges mount into it. It's made out of metal, and the color is painted on - thus the suggestions for refinishing it with spray paint.
I think you're too used to plastic in the new ones!

Try the satin not real glossy also some early 63 corvettes had clear plastic over dash door .you cant paint them
The trick is to get the right level of gloss in the black paint and do NOT pile it on. Misting is the best approach -- enough to cover things nicely. If you fill in that "camera case" grain it'll look amateurish and unnatural...

You are so right tape it up real good mist it just to get that new look
put newspaper inside the car on dash and window. if you don't have the door off ,don't fill the groves with paint.

Yes But it's not a fun job. And something you want to do for the fun of it. If I would take the time to remove it I would send it off to a gauge resto person and have the whole thing going over. I would wait until the fall and and winter and enjoy your car while you can
They did the gauge cluster and wiper motor in my 63 last summer. It took a bit longer than they originally estimated, but it was worth the wait. Go for the glass lens replacement, if not concerned about correctness. I'm not and everything looked great and worked the first time!

Sweet. Glad to hear. I will be sending them my cluster and glovebox.
Is there a thread that shows how to remove them correctly?
