Trying to rebuild my 043 generator. Got it all taken apart but I'm having trouble with removing the key way so I can remove the front plate from the armature.
I'm at the point were the key way is starting to get messed up because of me and a flat top screwdriver.
Use penetrating oil, and tap it with a brass hammer. Let it sit overnight. You can take a small drift and lightly tap down on each end...it will rock back and forth and eventually come free. Patience is required!
I always have a can of CRC Freeze-Off for bits like that.
Try it you'll like it. Warning though.....it's smelly, so do it outside over a rag then bring it in on the bench to tap it out. I use a flat ended drift on push each side like a see-saw. They're very soft and prone the expand with other methods.
I had the same problem a short while ago. Tried penetrating oil and tapping with punch as suggested. Nothing worked. Finally took it to a shop that specialized in removing broken drills and, using EDM, they were able to get it out. Not cheap ($80), but saved a lot of time and headache. BTW you can get a complete rebuild kit that includes a new key way. The major suppliers didn't have them.
Those key ways can be a pain, they are called Woodruff keys and are readily available at most hardware stores. Use a new one once you get the old one out. If you dress the new one with a flat file, it will come out much easier the next time.
