Default Paint on my hood on my 62 bubbled

I was at a car show and the hood was up. Bright sunny day. The center of the hood had 2 bubbles appear about the size of a quarter. The paint is 2 stage. I have heard that the reflection from the original air cleaner could reflect and generate heat to bubble the hood paint. . Has any body heard of this happening.

There are a bunch of photos of this on another thread I read awhile back. Yes, it is true. The parabolic reflected beam is like a magnifying glass.....it super-heats a small area and bakes the paint right off. Those in the know put a rag or card over their air cleaners if outside with the hood up. One guy left his car with the hood shut to go walk around a show, and when he came back, he found that somebody had raised his hood and left it like that.....you guessed it, it ruined the paint.

IT sure will. I saw it many times in the day. Now most will cover the chrome lid with a towel or a store bought lid cover. Never leave the hood up outside without covering it.

It happened to me also a year and a half ago. Mine was up for hours and I had a2 inch line because of the sun changing positions. It can be fixed and my 60 turned out good.

Has happened to me a few times.
If the bottom of your hood is painted flat or semi gloss black it can happen easily.
If you hood bottom is high gloss black it probably won't happen as it reflects the heat whereas flat or semi black absorbs the heat.
Be careful it can happen quickly.

Big Lots, and some of the Dollar stores, like Dollar Tree sell 15" round place mats. They are woven so if it's a windy day, you can push the bolt that holds the top of the breather on through the woven part and then attach the wing nut to hold it down. They have several different colors for anywhere from a dollar to two dollars something. I would have bought black but they didn't have it at the time. It beats burning the paint and it beats paying $50 for one of those with the Corvette logo.

You needed more than once to learn?

And, you dont need a place mat, or a $50 air cleaner condom to prevent the damage. One, leave your hood down, or two, drop an old hand towel on the AC. Easy.....

Yeah right. The day mine burned I had put a towel over it and went to look at some other cars. The wind came up and blew it off. Someone yelled at me that my hood was smoking. The sun had already raised the paint on the hood and was melting the hood seal.
And second, at car shows I attend if you don't leave the hood up it means you don't want to enter the show.

I bought it online from someplace... Corvette Central or ZIP? They arent hard to find, are decent looking, they are snug and stay in place and aren't expensive. I keep it in my storage compartment and always have it available when I'm displaying and there's direct sun.

Note: I looked and both these vendors have the one I bought, one is much less than the other. Im guessing most vendors carry it. I dont think the cost is a lot for cars with these price tags. If you display your car at all its worth 50 dollars. My insurance company wrote an $800 check to repair the damage on my car and match the Sebring Silver paint.

70 bucks for a piece of cloth isn't inexpensive to me.

I don't do car shows. At cars / coffee if my hood is up, I am nearby. A golf towel does the trick for me. Never has blown off yet. So, yeah, right.

Not everyone has the same experience and situations that you have. If it does blow off and burn your paint, remember this thread.
