Default 1966 weight

Has any body weighed their mid year? I have searched the internet get a different answer at every site. I can't find an answer on this site. Some sites give a weight and then add so many pounds to each option. Without driving to a scale somewhere, I'd like to know how much my car weighs as it sits now. L-72, 4 speed, factory side pipes, power steering, power brakes and radio.
Thanks

That document doesn't break it down to the small block and big block configuration. It only states that the coupe weighed in at 3140 #'s and the convertible at 3160 #'s. I thought I read somewhere that the BB's weighed around 3300 #'s.

I believe you might need to scroll down a little further on the page... there are additional weights for a BB, power steering, etc.

According to that my car weighs 3401. It also says design weight 3460.
What does design weight mean? That figure 3460 is what, small block, big block, + options, no options????? This makes a total of 6 different weights I have found.
This is as bad as figuring engine HP vs RWHP. I guess I have to weigh it.

At first, I would agree... but also consider the power antenna, ignition shielding, etc.

I guess the original power antenna is pretty heavy, and I've never weighed the ignition shielding, I'll just have to take their word for it.

Design weight is the weight of an empty car. Curb weight considers two passengers and a full tank of gas

Either weight doesn't distinguished big or small block or options. Do you go by curb weight then add? Design weight 3460 plus 261 lbs. for big block and options is 3721. That's awful heavy! I have to add 261 to some weight number, which one of the six I have found do I use?

The only way to truly find out the weight of your car is to take it to a scale and weigh it. Everything else is just a wag.

Just curious, what is the exact weight with options going to be used for? Do you need it with without coolant, gas, and oil? With or without passenger and driver? Spare? Jack?

There are several "weights" to consider as follows.

Shipping weight: As optioned with all normal equipment and full fluids except gasoline, which is factory filled to three gallons.

Curb weight: As above, but with full fuel, which would add about 100 pounds for the additional 17 gallons. Magazine road tests usually weigh the test vehicle in this condition.

Design weight: - GM engineer-speak for gross weight - say two 150 pound people and 100 pounds of cargo, so add 400 to curb weight.

(Note that my latter two definitions conflict with a previous post.)

If you want a really accurate answer, many automotive performance shops have four wheel digital scales, especially Porsche shops because vintage 911s with torsion bar suspension can easily be "corner balanced" by equalizing torsion bar preload side to side.

The 3460 you mentioned sounds more like curb weight than design/gross weight.

C2 Corvette weight, and most cars for that manner, usually see increases for each generation over the multi-year model run. For example, the C2 disk brake system is heavier than the superseded drum system. Also, owner changes tend to increase weight - steel belted radial tires weigh more than equivalent size bias-ply tires.

Back in the sixties I weighed my SWC (L-76, M-20, G-81, J-65, Wonderbar radio) on a truck scale. It had about 3/4 fuel and a small suitcase in the back. It came in at 3050 lbs, but that scale may have had only 50 pounds granularity.

As a general rule, everything else the same, big blocks add about 150 pounds over small blocks, and it's all on the front end.

Shipping weights and option weights are listed in most AMA specs. If not, try a later model year of the same generation.
