Default Corvette das insert

Hi again

I am trying to replace the corvette dash insert with letters for a new one. But it is not easy. The chrome part that surround the housing is solder. Take them out with heat can damage the chrome.
any ideas how to replace the corvette dash insert?

Thanks

you didn't say what year the car was...

However, if I understand your problem right, I had the same/similar problem when I replaced my insert on my '59. The chrome trim was soldered in spots to the insert nameplate.

I wound up cutting the solder with a Dremel tool and clearing all the excess with the Dremel tool also. to replace the backing with the chrome trim, I used a two part epoxy in spots and taped the pieces together while the epoxy hardened.

Might not be the best way but it was quick, easy, I had the tools and it worked well. Still holding up fine after about 7 years.

Correct answer....carefully Dremel through the thin brazing with a cutoff wheel.....

Then two part epoxy will hold the new insert in for another 50 years.

Here's a link to an earlier thread with a post by VetteJohn that may have some additional tips:
