Clutch problem?
I am getting a burning smell from clutch while engaging 1st gear.
Do you mean as your starting off and pulling away or is it as soon as you depress the clutch
My shifter is very tight especially with reverse.
On my car also it is a tight going into reverse,Its a real hard hit to the left to engage reverse this is not a clutch problem though it is a shifter problem for me
It will not move into 3rd and 4th.
Can you engage 3rd and 4th with the engine running but standing still? Or is it while you are in motion? If the car is off can you get it into all 4 gears ? This may be a shifter problem
The previous owners records say that he replaced the disc in the clutch and also throw out bearings.( what about the pressure plate and a flywheel resurface?)
My clutch was replaced by me less then 1000 miles ago But I had a oil leak and my clutch slips/burns only on hard acelleration.Just because its new does not mean it will last forever How maney miles on the clutch,is it fulley engaging and disengaging.do you have any adjustment left to the adjustment rod.
Give as much info as you have(ie is this a new problem to the car or have you purchased it this way,Have you driven a stick before and you know what slipping is,When did the problem start with the 3/4 gears unavailible ) and for sure this can be diagnoised by them members of the board
Have you tried adjusting your linkage?
Has your transmission been rebuilt? Maybe your clutch has nothing to do with third and fourth gear.
If you smell clutch then it is slipping and burning up or you have oil on it that is burning off.
Try adjusting your linkage so that you have some free travel at the top of your pedal to ensure that it is engaging fully.
Kurt
You indicate that it is difficult to get into gear with the clutch fully depressed.
This indicates improper adjustment (Too much free play at the top)
But then you say that the clutch is slipping while fully engaged..
This indicates improper adjustment the other way... (Not enough free play at the top of the clutch travel)
This makes me think that the wrong throw out bearing was used and the adjustment is unabe to make up the difference.
Do you have free play at the top with the clutch fully out???
I'm not sure I understand your other references to 3rd and 4th gears..
Maybe a bit more info would help
BTW....
Are the clutch and brake pedals an equal distance from the floor???
There is a short throw position not sure exactly how it works and what ill effects it might have..
If pedal distance is equal that is the factory position..

It sounds like you might be confusing chatter with slipping...
If the clutch is jumpy while engaging, that is chatter, and is usually caused by oil in the disk surface or broken parts.
Your shifting problems I'm sure are related to the Bubba installed Hurst shifter.
If the shifter mounting to the trans is not aligned properly in Neutral it is difficult if not impossible to get into or out of the reverse lockout gate...
If the shift arms are improperly adjusted you can't shift properly
Check that shifter and get it shifting properly into each gear without the engine running first...
Good luck
