Provide some hint as to your location in your profile, and then give a clue in your post where exactly 1200 miles is from you where the purported car is, ie, the car might be here nearby to me, or any of dozens of regulars on this forum who live all over the country. Ask if anyone is willing to check for the existence of the car and maybe even check some numbers on it, check for rust, verify some of the things in the ad you are looking at. Be willing to pay a modest fee for this service, ie $200-300. Mid year buyers do this all the time, and save time, money, airfare, etc.
The vin will only tell you what model the car is the make, coupe or convertible, year, and when it was built within a couple days. If your asking to varifiy if the vin tag is a real GM issued tag and is original to the car it's attached to with the factory used rivets then that is anther story
Well the VIN on the title should match the one riveted to the bar under the glove box. It should also be stamped on the frame on the LH side on the kickup near the rear wheel but it could be dirty and/or rusty and difficult to see. It's also stamped on the frame under the drivers seat but you can't see that one with the body on.
It would also be stamped on the engine pad assuming it has an original engine...

I believe the answer to your original question is you hire a service that will inspect the car including the VIN. An example below http://www.roadreadyinspections.com/
Question, how can I verify a VIN before I drive 1200 miles only to find out its a different vehicle, or that there never was a vehicle.
Thanks
Jim
Thanks to all! My original question was more to find out if I entered a VIN was there a way I could get the current owners name. Turns out the owner sent me photos of the title along with the VIN
Jim
well, in that case, I would suggest you get more specific and detailed in your future questions so that we don't waste time offering information you have no interest in. Not that we have any concerns about wasting our time, since many of us waste hours writing silly stuff on the glowing box. But still, why bother writing a bunch of stuff to someone who cares nothing about it?
