I can imagine what to do to move the tube nut closer to the wheel. What I'm imagining, though, would remove material in such a way that the angle gauge wouldn't be as useful for those bends NOT near the tube nut. I'll take a look at my benders tomorrow and see if any other idea presents itself...
I like it when someone thinks and figures things out....You are on the right track....and on my 3/8" bender...I did what you are thinking and it works perfectly.....and it does not bend the tube funky....and I am sure you can also figure out how the double flare in the tube..can be at the flare nut....and the flare nut located where you are thinking....and how to hold the tube so you can make a bend basically right after the nut.
Take a flare nut by itself and put it where you are thinking and you will see ...not much needs to be modified.
The only one I can not figure out is the 3/16" tubing bender....due to it is totally made differently than my IE 5/16" and 1/4" benders.
