Default Need help with '67 cluster

Guys, I'm putting back together this '67 that came to me with the dash parts in boxes. The wiring diagram shows a black wire to be the cluster ground. I cannot find a single black wire, however I do find a single large brown wire with the correct end terminal. Is the diagram wrong? Also I have an extra gray wire illumination bulb that I'm sure at this point goes to nothing. Gone over it many times and cannot find any place to plug it in. It is on the driver's side of the cluster. Everything else appears to be right.

Look closely, as some wires discolor with age. I know, black doesn't discolor. Having said that, black is correct. Dennis

The cluster ground wire on a 67 comes out from the interior harness and is a single black wire with a female push on connector. There is s tab on the top center or the dash that the black wire slides into.
There are 2 bulbs, one for cig lighter and one on the ignition switch. Many times these are overlooked. Hope this helps.

Here's a pic that might help - ground connector spade in red arrow.

There is still a large brown wire that comes out of the same harness that all the wires are in for the cluster. Same end as the cluster black ground wire.Looking at the diagram and under the dash I can't find where it goes. Also took the bracket out that exposes the brake switch. There is a large capacitor mounted close to the brake switch, one end has a black wire going to ground the other end is orange with a flat 90* end on it. I figure it goes into one of the brake switch terminals, but which one? The wiring diagram does not show this capacitor.

Do you by chance have a speed warning cluster? If so, it may be the buzzer wire and I can post some pics. My pics don't show the color of the wire clearly.

Take a look at you AIM, UPC U69, sheet A4. It shows each of the capacitor flags plugging into the brake switch connector. Here's a pic without the connector.

The brown wire goes to the radio capacitor on the back of the cluster, if you have a radio. If you don't have a radio, it goes nowhere. It is hot with the ignition switch on, so don't connect it to anything but the capacitor. Also. as babbah suggested , your extra gray wire may go to the ignition switch or the cigar lighter. Picture below.

Here are pics of the cluster ground connection and the portion of the dash harness where it is located. The first figure is a page from a document that Tim (buns) and I have been working on for awhile.

Hope these help.

I see now.You are right the last illumination bulb should go to the ignition switch. However the replacement switch did NOT have the cavity to hold the bulb, and it came from Ecklers. There was no capacitor on the cluster anywhere for the brown wire. What is the effect if there is not one? It does have a radio.

It appears you have a replacement style switch without the auxiliary bulb mounting "fixture". Eckler's website has a note to that effect.

Perhaps others who have found a "work around" for this issue will chime in.

Regarding the brown wire to the radio capacitor, my car does not have the capacitor and the only ill effect might be a little noise in the radio. As I recall, that wire is hot all the time so you m might want to put some tape over the connector if you are not going to track down a capacitor. The pg below if rom the AIM for my '65.
