Last Friday, I was cleaning-up the '64 for a show to be held the next day. After the body and interior were done, I sprayed each tire with my McGuire's Wheel & Tire Cleaner. Some of the cleaner got on the American Racing Wheels, but I was tired, so I told myself I'd clean them the next morning when I got to the show. The next morning, when I sprayed cleaner wax on the wheels, the tire cleaner wouldn't come off, in fact, it had stained the rims. "Oh S*@t!"
So, today, I finally got up the nerve to try to rectify the situation. I got out my little can of Mother's and set to work. After a couple hours of rubbing and wiping, the wheels are ok, again.
Another good reason to use fully-polished Americans, they clean up quicker and easier than painted or (God forbid!X) original old-school ARE rims with porous, UNPAINTED spokes!
When I got my four used 200S wheels, the ouer rims were BEAUTIFULLY polished, but the daisy spokes were funky. I masked the rims and had the wheels lightly sandblasted. Then I rattle-can sprayed 'em with black "rubber bumper" paint. Still look fine after 25 years!
