Did I offer too much
I'll try to make this short.
I know of a 57 that has been tucked away since the early seventies. The current owner purchased it it 61' and decided to have it painted from Aztec copper to Arctic blue and a complete interior change. Car was partially disassembled for paint, it was painted and never put back together, this was in the early to mid 70's (he can't remember). All new interior is in boxes and I'll presume no good, dry rotted, mice etc.
I only saw the car one time about seven eight years ago, I quick partial peak is all I got. The blue paint looked great from what I remember frame was good. I think he mentioned driving it to and from the paint shop. Ran when parked
Here is what I know . 57 both tops. original motor w dual quads and three speed. I think the bumpers , trim and most of the interior has been removed and all the parts are there, condition unknown. I offered $20k a few years ago. I ran into the owner yesterday and he's about read to sell. I asked what kind of price and he said the $20k is good. He also mentioned he looked at the car for the first time in a few years and it's gunna need a little work, he said , lol I'm sure it will. He said he would call me in a few days . I hope I didn't offer too much. Keep this in mind, this was a car someone told me about and I knocked on his door and over the years we befriended each other but he always said not for sale. I got one peak at the car, it's under a cover with parts on shelves. I thought I made a fair offer, I'm second guessing that.
What do we think about this.

I'm not positive about the frame however the body looked great. The car left the paint shop to his garage never to see daylight again.

I don't know what part of the county the car lived in but if it was solid when parked and the garage isn't a humidity trap I'd say you've done well...based on a very limited description.
In any event as others have said I don't know how it could be a "bad" offer on a complete 57 not sitting with obvious damage.

I think you did great, assuming it is what you think.
They're not real complicated. If you can do most or all of your own work you'll come out way ahead. If you don't want it, please send me his number.
Be sure you get the VIN plate.

You are stealing it if is a complete car with correct engine and all the parts are there, both tops, wonderbar, carbs, etc. Better hope he doesn't get on the internet and figure out what it is really worth!!!

He know's what it is worth, he actually said he could a lot more for it on the internet. He watches the discovery channel car shows and Barrett Jackson of course. He's retired, done well for himself just wants to fish.

Another vote for 20k being a really great price for this car. Good luck with the purchase, and keep us updated!

From one Hoosier to another, if you don't, I'm in with a finders fee.

Sounds like a great deal as stated above about title and VIN, very important. A friend and I paid $17k for basically a shell with a good title and VIN with about half trim parts a few months ago.

Few things
1.The vin plate should be screwed on drivers door pillar yes ?
2. Can someone post a photo of a correct 57 engine stamp pad.

Yes, the VIN plate should be screwed on to the front upright portion of the driver's side door jamb. When cars are disassembled for paint the VIN plate is one of the first things taken off, and then easily lost. Getting a new one is a hassle.
You can see here where mine is...
And my stamp on my original engine...
Very simple pad. No engine serial number like there was in '56.

At $20,000, I'll take two, please. Can't possibly go wrong at that price. You could probably part it out for more than that. And if it indeed has the original engine, that would be a rarity and a big plus. Sounds like a fun project. Post some pics as soon as you can!

Congrats. This is the type of find we all dream about!

Great find! At $20k you can't lose - it's worth more than that in parts alone!
