Default Replacement Starter

Looking for a replacement starter for my 67 327/300.

The original one is pretty weak after the engine is warm. I am going to keep the original and get it rebuilt but i want another one for a spare and to use while the original is rebuilt.

What is the difference between the big block starter and the small block starter? I see some say with or without heavy duty clutch.

Are all the ring gears the same for BB and SB? If one has a better solenoid, I would rather that one.

you should be able to pick up a rebuilt starter for your small block at NAPA or any of the other retail parts outlets. Usually they will require you surrender a core or pay a core charge. Most of these rebuild units get new brushes, bearings, solenoid and any faulty parts found. The last one I got was really cheap around $30.00, but it had a cheap Chinese solenoid that only last about 6 months.

I have had my trust in a Delco Remanufactured one for 12-15 years. I think the key to a long life is to make a heat shield. Dennis

Sounds good. I have a heat shield on now. i will just reuse it.

Napa has a starter for $55+core. I will just eat the core as I want to get my original rebuilt.

Takes a good couple hours to rebuild yours that includes R/R. Why not just get the rebuild parts and do it. I see no reason to buy anther one

I have no problem completing the task myself. Didn't realize it was that easy.

Do you have a recommendation on what parts to get?

is it just solenoid and brushes?

Others may chime in but yes those parts. Standard Products sold at any good parts store is a good choice. And paint to make look all new

I had the original starters in both of my cars professionally rebuilt for below $70 when they needed it...with a warranty.

Not that hard to rebuild a starter. However, I sent my SB starter out to have it rebuilt with additional field coils just like the BB cars. Starter was okay before, but was slow when hot or if/when battery was weak. Now the engine turns over like a jet turbine..... hot or cold, day or night, weak or strong battery. So consider this.

I am certain MANY starter rebuild companies can do this: local or mail order. I used John Pirkle many years ago. They may still do this work. Ken Bruno is another well know rebuilder. Again, a local rebuilder should/can also do this work if he is good.

FWIW.

Did you find a cast iron nose with the bolts straight across?

or does it have the bolts diagonal? I have straight across but wondering if there is another hole that I cannot see that would support a diagonal starter bolt pattern.

John, there is a lot of info related to SB/BB starters in this thread, you might want to check it out. I think you'll find answers to some of your questions there.
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...k-starter.html

Tom Parsons (DZAuto) has a tremendous body of knowledge related to the various starters and bell-housings used on Chevrolet engines throughout the years and I would pay particular attention to what he says. If you have a question that is still unanswered, just send him a PM.

Good Luck... GUSTO

as usual, someone will correct me if i'm wrong, BUT the straight across/diagonal hole thing has to do with what bellhousing you have, not whether it is BB/SB.

FWIW, the new gear reduction min-starters are impressive... small and easy to install and pack a lot of 'punch'...
