Default windshield removal

I am trying to remove the windshield on my 1959 and am having a devil of a time. The windshield is the original and is severly cracked. I have removed all the screws on the trim, but the trim is still firmly in place and I don't want to bend it all up. Any ideas on the best way to get the windshield out.
Thanks, Ray

The windshield will not come out with the frame still on the car. The winshield comes out with the frame as a unit. Then you have to take the frame apart to get the glass out. Difficult job. Get the ST-12 for details. Also check the archives for tricks. Very easy to crack the glass when you go to put it back in.

Chris is right. There is a LOT of info in the archives both here and http://www.ncrs.org Also, if you promise to buy the ST-12 ('53-'62 Corvette Servicing Guide), I can send you a copy of an article in Vette or Corvette Fever that ran a year or two back.

Ray-

I can email it to you, but it's three pages and each one is about 1meg. That's fine on my end, but I want to make sure it's OK for you. Or I can fax or regular mail it if you e-mail me your fax# or address.

There are a total of twelve fastners under the dash. There are two 1/2" nuts on each corner and eight 7//16" nuts on "T" bolts around the rest of the perimiter. Be sure to remove ALL of them or you may break something. It will be necessary to remove the defroster nozzle on the left side, but you may be able to work around the one on the right. The ST 12 indicates you must remove the LH wiper transmission. I strongly advise against this unless you just can't get the nuts off otherwise. The wiper transmissions are a whole new potential can of worms. Once the frame is loose, it is a whole lot easier to remove with two people, though I've done it by myself a couple of times. Be very careful of the metal tabs on the bottom of the side posts. They are easily broken, and may have to be sent off if repair is necessary. They are die cast and somewhat fragile.

When you get the frame off, let us know and someone will help you with the reinstall. The ST 12 has pretty good instructions, but there are a few tricks. I strongly advise thast you forget using any sealer at all on the glass or frame. All it does is make a mess. If your car is like most C1's, it will leak a lot of places before it leaks around the windshield.

Did this job last year on my 62. Got a lot of great support from people here on the forum! Info you have received is all correct (of coarse). I did not have to remove the wiper transmission, and don't see any reason for it to be ever removed for windshield removal/installation. Also, I did not use any sealer (as stated above, it would only complicate things and make a mess). I did add the black sealer (dum-dum) between the body and front lower trim. I think this finishes off the installation and prevents bugs and crap from wedging inbetween the body and trim. I also polished all the trim while it was off.

Search the archives for the following: "C1 Windshield weatherstrip replacement" with myself as "author", dated in Oct. and Nov. of 2001. You will find 2 threads (first is where I asked for help, and 2nd is where I stated how I did the job, (plus ask for more help!).

Good luck, and my windshield is still in one piece and the weatherstrip looks great!

Be Patient!....................Be VERY Patient!

Lots of help available here on the forum as LOTS of us have done this nasty job.

I've done it but will have to do it again as I broke the new windshield and due to the unavailabiliy of quality windshields over here I ended up putting the old one back in.

I think I'll wait at least another year before attempting it again!

Good Luck, Mark.

Guys thanks for all the help. I got it out last night (and it wasn't all that bad). Now I will put it in strorage (in one piece) until the frame and body restoration is complete. In about a year or so I'll be looking for your help on the HARD job of actually replacing the glass.
Thanks, and I'll throw my next question at you here in the near future.
