It's not a numbers/engine code match by any means. And NAPA lists it for '60-'67 but not '59. If you look through the ATK catalog online you have to be careful as many of their 283's are really 350" upgrades or even 1 piece seal 305's and 350" motors. Also that 3.75" bore GMPP block mentioned is a 1 piece rear main seal 305" block.
ATK makes good reman motors as I wouldn't be afraid to buy and use one. They also have a performance crate engine business with plenty of sbc options.

other than ease of replacement, wouldn't a one-piece seal be a better seal?
I piece is a better seal, no question. The problem is, engines that use this seal are '87 and up blocks, and tend to use center bolt valve covers and also have no road draft tube orifice provision at the rear of the block. So if you're trying to go for a 283 look, with stock valve covers, etc., the late style block won't do it.
The new design 2 piece seal does an excellent job.
It is a direct replacement for the old style rope seal.
It is a polymer material with steel inserts and is easily installed in 283 engines from 1958 and newer.

Bill
I guess the point I forgot to make is that GMPP 3.75" bore block uses larger crank journals than the original 283" blocks. I wasn't trying to make a preference for the rear main seal but a buyer should note it takes a different flywheel/flexplate.
For those interested many of the common auto parts stores will sell the ATK remans and maybe some other brand reman. But I like ATK.
Dont know what you are shooting for, but my '51 Chevy has a new GM 350 crate (260 hp rating) from Jegs. Great bargain at $1,495 delivered. Runs like a top and has plenty of go.
