Default Removal of speed gauge

Do you remove the speed guage from the front of the dash cluster?
If so how does the black trim ring come off
Thanks
Fred

You'll have to remove the cluster as a unit and remove from the back..

Heres an old link from JohnZ on removal..

AND, if you're going to go through the aggravation of pulling the entire cluster, which you MUST do to get the speedometer out.......

you might as well consider having the entire cluster redone...

The tachometer has as many turns on it as the speedometer.

Your other gauges might need to be recalibrated or rebuilt, and you might want to consider cosmetically restoring the cluster.... paint, new gauge lenses, etc. etc.

And as Chuck "remembered" recently, pull the steering col. 1st.
And label where the wires are attached........including any capacitor connections.

Well, that's not EXACTLY the story.

John (Plasticman), myself, Bill (WMF62) and a few others recently pulled the instrument cluster from a friend's 67 coupe. Ironically, it was because the odometer/trip odometer quit working.

We took it out WITH the steering column in place.

Then, the learned group of us 65-75 year old gentlemen assembled around the car figured that we would NEVER be able to reinstall it with the column in place.

SO.. we pulled the column. Probably would have been easier and quicker to do it first. I've pulled them and reinstalled them with the column in place.

This veteran group of Vette owners has not mentioned cost. You could do all the R&R yourself, but the calibration is another matter. So sending it out for a complete restoration could cost in the neighborhood of $800- $1200. Dennis

Cost returned was ~$540.00 and that included insured shipping. It cost him ~$45.00 ship it insured, so adding those figures together, you get $585.00

I had the speedo take a dump in my 63 several months ago. Pulled the cluster and sent it to the same guy. My price was approximately the same.

Now, realize one thing... the clusters in both of these cars were REAL NICE to begin with. No cosmetic resto really needed.

In both cars, speedo/odo/trip odo rebuilt. Tach rebuilt. Gauges calibrated.

I got a new original ammeter "guts" behind my old face.

My buddy had the tach RPM colors redone/repainted. They were faded.

Maybe a few other minor things.

A complete, full blown resto... repainting the cluster, rechroming, new lenses, new everything, plus gauge rebuilding can cost you upwards of $1200.00

Chuck
