Default 64 trans question

I am installing a new crate GM engine in my 64, while trans is out I am replacing most of the seals in the trans and cleaning everything up as I go along. My concern with the clutch gear shaft (the shaft with 10 splines that goes thru the clutch disc and into the pilot brg in the end of the crankshaft. It has a fair amount of end play in it, guessing it is an1/8" or so, is this normal? Am going to put a new frt seal in the clutch gear brg retainer, could the clutch brg retainer nut need to be tightnened up
to take out some play? Also the new pilot brg I got with the clutch kit has some magnetism in it, read some where that you should boil in oil for a few minutes, or is this an old back yard tale? Thanks for any advice on these issues and if I should go another way.

Radial play in the clutch gear is normal in a transmission with any miles on it. Some are really sloppy.

I agree. Totally normal and not a concern. If it had no play, something would be wrong. The pilot bushing/bearing supports the 'floppy' end of the shaft when the trans is installed, and it doesn't flop around at all.

The pilot shaft moves because there is some play in the front bearing.

You can remove and replace it, but the thread is left hand pitch, so tighten it to loosen it.

Use the twelve ball bearing bearing not the eight ball.

Good luck
