Is it imperative that the washer goes back on the star adjuster? When I took mine off to clean up, there was a washer between the little nub that slides off the end of the adjuster and the main part. When I put everything back together, I forgot the washer. I did put some copper anti seize on that smooth part and the threads.

YES. The thin smooth washer ensures the pawl wheel moves smoothly.
Damn. Well at least I'll have a lot of practice removing and installing drum brakes.
I don't suppose there is a way to remove just the star adjuster without taking everything back apart is there?
Sure. Run the pawl wheel all the way in then force the bottom of the shoes apart. Remove the torpedo. Install the washer and wedge the whole torpedo back into the shoe slots. Adjust the pawl wheel back out. 10 minute job.

Whew, that's good to hear... thanks frank!
On a side note, I came in last night after getting some time to work on the brakes and said to the wife, well after 3 years, I finally got one of the rear brakes back together. She responded with, are you sure you should be working on brakes? I hesitated for a minute. But then relized I have this forum!!
Gonna get a bumper sticker, "Corvetteforum is my co-pilot"
Instead of forcing the shoe apart at the bottom, I think it would be easier to take a shoe loose at the top and fold it toward the other shoe which is still anchored. You shouldn't even have to disconnect the bottom spring.

Maybe....its been a while since I've left out any brake parts
