If you're taken unawares and unarmed, its best just to lay the keys on the car and back away carefully with the family (if around)... Might still not work out but it just might...
IMO - the type of transmission prob had zero to do with things; these punks were going to kill somebody that night...just needed some lame reason...

+1 I think the root of the problem is that we have thugs with guns running around willing to shoot innocent people over nothing. Weird that this was spun into a manual transmission story.
News sensations. Got to have scoop to print even if they haven't the slightest idea of facts involved. Could have been a total accident, foot slipped off the clutch. Car jackers are under a lot of pressure / stress. Probably his first evil deed in his criminal occupation.
Sad day for human interactions.

You sure do give the benefit of the doubt to the perp. I think the ******* should receive the death penalty. A family lost a husband and father over a car!
"Car jackers are under a lot of pressure / stress." Should he get a participation trophy?

Wondering if Jrs 427 post was a tongue in cheek comment.
Its even sad that we have to even say that now its getting worst every
day .I guess we should start carrying a weapon
On our recent trip to MN, we were at a WalMart, early evening but dark. I waited in the car with SinDee, the Rat Terrier, observing a guy in ghetto garb wandering about. Eventually, he approached the car and motioned for me to roll down the window. I had already locked the car doors. I drew my S&W and had it in my hand, but hidden. First time I've ever had to pull my gun with the thought that I might need to use it. There was no need for concern, however, because SinDee was not happy at all about a stranger outside the car. She let the guy know in no uncertain terms that he was not welcome. The guy turned around and walked away. I kept an eye on the guy, making sure he wasn't anywhere near my wife as she returned to the car.
Chances are the guy was just a panhandler but you really don't ever know for sure and it's better to be prepared if things take a turn for the worse. I pray I'm never in a situation where I have to use deadly force.

Sure I think so.
Sarcastic acerbic gallows humor.
I'll add one.
Perps can now sue the dead guys estate for big money because if the car only had an automatic transmission they would not have had to murder him.

agreed and a pathetic judicial system that does not eradicate such low life POS from the face of the earth !

What could a scummy homeless guy possibly have to say to you that you would roll your window down? Really? I stopped acknowledging these losers/predators 35 years ago after learning that they all had the same story, and they all wanted something for nothing. By rolling down your window and interacting, you are empowering them. And possibly getting yourself into a situation where you go to jail for shooting or brandishing a weapon.
You HAVE to have your whits about you; some here should maybe study the green/yellow/red self-defense scenarios or the well-defined steps leading up to an attack.
I worked in Chinatown in DC during Y2K crisis and left work at all hours of the day and night. Muggings and worse happened during that period. A favorite trick was for some jerk off to throw a wet, waded up piece of toilet paper against the side of your door to make a loud noise and his pal would motion you to stop as if you had hit something.
As you can imagine, things would go downhill from there...
Two 16 year old punks blew a guy away in Tampa in front his 10 year old son two weeks back while he was trying to sell the kid's dirt bike on Craiglist. I don't trust anybody I don't know that gets closer than a few feet from my self-proclaimed personal boundary...

I will respectfully disagree, while pointing out that (at least) a couple of recent videos which were widely distributed on TV, showing that unarmed motorists were pulled from their cars, by unnamed people, for NOTHING, and beaten severely. IF the victim had only had a CCL and had been carrying, then he could have defended himself and his family. I live in Texas, and these crimes did not happen here, but in locations where guns and self defense are forbidden, but "safe cities" and thug attacks are tolerated

What a sick move to shoot a father in front of his family.
I don't believe that bs about a manual transmission, just another instance where the media tries to juce up a story with nothing but nonsense.
And for the guys speculating that this wouldn't have happend if he was carrying, maybe he was right? We don't know that?
No matter how it happened it's just a very sad story
