Default Tips For Touching Up Chips/Cracks?

My 66 is a driver quality car with an older respray. I have a few chips and quite a few small cracks. Any suggestions on procedures for touching them up?

I have a '66 coupe with the same chips, but I do not have it with the intention of it being a trailer queen for shows. Besides if I spent $6-8000 to have it repainted, a dump truck in front of me would throw a rock, and another chip would be there. Drive it, and enjoy it.

I use a small sable brush and enamel touch up paint. You can fill in a chip in one to three stages. My car is Roman Red.....the touch up paint matches perfectly. You can spot it if you're looking for it, but not from 5-10 feet away.

For base coat clear coat I use the base color and mix it 50/50 with clear nail polish. Then I dap it on the spot with a toothpick.Leave paint a little high to allow for shrinkage. Takes a little practice and keep some nail polish remover on hand to take off your mistakes. If you get a little Nail polish remover on the paint you can use glazing compound to bring the shine back.

I use this stuff along with some touch-up paint...one purchase will last you years...
Build up the chip to a small bubble with repeated applications of color matched touch-up then use this product to 'knock it down' gradually; following the directions:

http://www.langka.com/index.php/feat...lob-eliminator

Usually that's enough...if a little better fix is desired some wet sanding with 1500 then 2000 with the sandpaper wrapped around a Popsicle stick does the trick.

I never bother trying to dab clear over a repair; I've never had that make things look better -- only worse.

Go to your local hobby lobby or arts supply shop and find the paint brush choices....they have very fine ones that are much better to use than the kind of brush that comes in the cap of touch up tubes....I found some "micro brushes" there....super fine brush tips on the end of what looks like long thick toothpics. Give those a shot.

Starting in the 50's and even today Dealers offered paint sticks for rock and chip marks ,When you buy any Car or Corvette even NOW you can oder the color of your Corvette or car color from the parts department and keep it with your Corvette for touch up

The very finest points are the brushes the gals use to paint their fingernails in different designs, much more fine than anything you'll get at a big box store or Ace, or even a hobby ship:

Amazon Amazon

You can even buy fingernail 'dotting brushes' for spots you can barely see (use a magnifying glass in strong light for paint application)

'cracks' cannot be fixed by dabbing paint.... I use single stage paint for touch ups.

Here's an old car show trick... that works for red cars.

Turn in your man card and go to the lipstick section of any grocery store of pharmacy.

Pick a red lipstick shade that matches your paint.

Use the lipstick to rub into cracks and rub onto chips. Obviously wipe off the excess.

Not a permanent solution, but it will TEMPORARILY hide a lot of flaws.

I'm just got a mental image of you doing this Chuck; perhaps with your pinky finger extended at a jaunty angle as you hold the lipstick.

Some things you can't unimagine

Since lipstick is petroleum/wax/parafin based, it would be the last thing I would want in a fiberglass crack. It seems to me it would be a great way to contaminate the glass for any future real repair.

Maybe so, but if you want to mask problems instantly, it's a good trick.

As I said, it's an old car show trick.. along with using Lemon Pledge to wipe down your car to give it that quick temporary shine.

Please explain how this stuff works, or what it does.

Thanks,

Like black shoe polish to hide small cracks in the paint on black cars.

it doesn't make them invisible, it just makes them less noticeable.
