Default Door Alignment Issue

I started putting the doors back on muy 65 yesterday and the driver's side aligns perfectly but I'm having issues with the passenger's side. Got tired last night and thought it was time to take a break and recoup before I try it again. The door shuts fine and opens okay from the inside. I don't have the weatherstripping on yet....just trying to get the car ready for a senior picture. See the pictures below and if someone knows, give me hint on what to do.

Should I shim the body mounts?

Thanks,
Dex

It's hard to say if you should shim the mounts without pictures of the whole opening and the big picture.

It'd be nice to know how the doors fit before they were removed as well.

The doors aligned fine before they were removed did painting. I'll try to post a whole picture later today.

Thanks,
Dex

Are the gaps even all around the door? That will tell you if you need to rotate the door or just raise it up. To get it just right, you may need to enlarge the holes in the hinges.

The door looks low at the front compared to the fender. Back looks OK vertically. I can't tell if they are flush in/out to the fenders from the photos.

Hopefully this picture helps. Thanks everyone!!!

It lined up perfectly before getting it painted. Just not sure which way to shift it.

Thanks,
Dex

Assuming the hinge rivets are sound it looks like the door needs moved up slightly in the front. Increasing the gap at the lower rear edge and bringing the ridge along the belt line into alignment. Should be just a hinge adjustment IMO. Don't think shims are needed You can place a 2x4 on top of a bottle jack to support the door at the bottom while you move the door up a bit at the front.

Near as I can tell, I'd rotate the door counterclockwise in the opening. A little up in the front and forward and then a little down in the rear and aft. That will probably make the rear of the door low to the quarter but you can change that by body shimming if need be.

I'd rotate the door and not worry about the rest of it.

As mention loosen the hinges and bring the door up to where the front ridge is in line with the fender ridge and tighten hinge bolts. Then untighten top hinge and drop rear of door till the rear ridges are in line. Tighten and see where you are at. After doing these steps you may have a feel for what you need to do next. Did you go back with the same body mounts in the same location. Not sure about C2 convertibles but C1's are flexible enough that you can add or take away body shims at rear of door and get the ridges and gaps to line up.

I would shoot for keeping the cutline margin at the door fender as uniform as I could and maybe sacrifice a V margin at the door/quarter if needed.

The angle of your photo is such that it's hard to judge your margin at the top of the fender due to the curve in the cut line.

Thanks everyone for the info. I will try these steps tomorrow night, if time permits. The door closes and opens fine so I wasn't exactly sure what to do. The driver's door went on easy.

Thanks again,
Dex

YEP...it needs to go up in the front and then down at the rear of the door.

Had similar issue on my 58. Ended up adding a shim to the rear most body to frame mount and removing a shim at the mount ahead of the rear wheel. Not familiar with C2's but you might want to look into it.

The striker and latch are only to hold the door shut.

If necessary, remove the striker, fit the door to the opening and then set the striker as required.

You do realize that when you put on the new weatherstrips, when the door tries to compress them, it will kick the door around to a position you may not like until they take a permanent set.

Thanks MikeM. Yeah, I know that when I put new weatherstrips on it'll change up everything. I'm just trying to get everything ready for one or two senior pictures for my daughter.

Thanks,
Dex
