Default 4 speed overdrive????

Does anyone make a gear set that fits in an original Muncie case?

I also have a 1966 Dodge Charger with a 523 stroker engine, Dana 9 3/4" w/3.54 gear and 4 speed.
I replaced the 4 speed gear set with an aftermarket one that a guy in Penn. makes that changes the gear ratios that are close to a Torqueflite auto for 1st, 2nd and 3rd 3rd being 1 to 1 BUT 4th is a 20% reduction. It is a GREAT trans all the power you need in 1 thru 3 and a great highway cruise gear in 4th. Here is a link to his web site, click on the picture that says "Hemi 4 speed overdrive" for the specs and prices.
https://www.passonperformance.com/

The best part of this is it fits in the original 4 speed case so there are no modifications to the car.

DOES ANYONE MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS??? If not they should.

I think there was an overdrive Muncie gear set. Third was overdrive. Might check with a Paul at 5 speeds or Jody at Jody's transmissions in PA.

Are you talking about an original Muncie built unit?

Chrysler did an OD 4 speed back in the day but they are weak and worthless for a performance car application.

In mopar these were new process built a-833 over drives. Common in the 70's. I bought one for my 70
challenger. Lo these many years it's still in the basement.

IIRC for used them as well. Chevy uses an my6

Sounds like you are talking about an old fashion type 3 speed overdrive trans that was used by I think the big 3 and also Rambler in the 50s-60s. They were a standard 3 speed manual trans with a separate OD unit. They were typically used with a 4.56 rear end. If that is what you are referring to that is NOT what I am looking for. I am looking for a GM equivalent of the aftermarket unit made by Passon.

The ones I have seen are Muncie's with 3rd gear being the overdrive gear. Not a real performance gear spread, and an awkward pattern. It is impossible for 4th gear to be overdrive on a Muncie as 4th is direct through the mainshaft. I think the name of his unit was an M23Y. Agree with checking with one of the 4 speed builders like Dave, Paul, Jody, etc. If it's just for cruising, though, it's an easy, no-mod-to-the-car install.

Well, I THINK that is the same with the original Chrysler trans and if I am correct then someone should be able to do the same with the Muncie.

Riverside Gear used to have the conversion gearsets....don't know if they still do. That was for the M20 Muncie.

no, 4th is OD, the OD gear just happens to be in the 3rd gear position inside the transmission, it is operated by flipping the 3/4 lever upside down. same thing with the Chrysler based MY6. it shifts in the normal H-pattern.

according to a search I did today for another similar question on the forum, the autogear gear set no longer seems to be made.

the MY6 is an awesome transmission and I would still be using it if I hadn't bought a SS-700 5-spd... in hindsight, a BIG mistake on my part...

M21Y, although it could be used in any case with the full gear set

So, a few questions about this MY6 trans.
1. What are the gear ratios in this trans?
2. Is it as strong as the regular Muncie?
3. Are there any differences between the regular Muncie such as
bell housing or clutch?
4. Is the tail shaft the same as the regular Muncie?
5. Are these difficult transmissions to find?

62 corvette, Plasticman also has one in a 62.

except for finding one, what wasn't answered? except for needing a large hole bellhousing, it is a direct replacement for a Muncie.

Is the large hole bell housing readily available?
The other web site was talking about using it in an A body and I don't know if that application is the same as a C1.

Actually that site said they are often found on the shelf of trans shops probably collecting dust.
I would have asked questions on the other site but the thread is 12 years old.

they come up on ebay once in a while.

one thing to look out for is that there are 2 versions, the difference being the pattern of the bolt-up to the bellhousing. unless you get the bellhousing with it, you want to get the one that uses a standard Muncie bolt-up pattern, AND you will need a large hole bellhousing. I use a cast iron open bottom truck bellhousing.
