You didn't read the right book. If you had, you would have realized that you need a vacuum advance that passes the Two-Inch Rule.

Search for threads started by me, download and read the tuning seminar.

If my 383 got 10-13 mpg highway, I'd figure I needed to change my driving habits or fix the engine.

383 and an Honest Charley camshaft does not have to make it a gas hog.

Seems like SWC Duke got you confused with the OP who declared " no vacuum advance"!

No he his just trying to tell people you can build a street engine with good manors have horse power and get decent gas millage. But a lot of people don't under stand this and put your hot rod Harry parts in it. Then complain about after they drive it. Duke has more years of experance on this then most on here. When he talks you should listen. He help me tremendously and made my car run much better and more enjoyable.

, mismatched 'add-on' parts can be nothing but trouble; especially in the 'hands' of a novice.

I don't have his 'high falutin' degree, but I've been through the school of hard knocks.... I resent his condescending attitude; and, he has been wrong...

Too many people around here are stuck in 1970, others are stuck in 1962.

Hot Rod Harry
327, 485 HP, 200 ft-lbs @ 2000 RPM, 750 CFM DP, 248/256 duration, 3.70 axle, 215-70 radials, .67 O/D........25 MPG @ 75 MPH.

You old dinosaurs ought to actually build one THE RIGHT WAY and quit yer bullshlt.

I re-geared my heavy 3800 lb '67 GTO for highway use and installed a 2.56 gear ratio. The car has a turbo 400 (this ratio wouldn't fly with a stickshift) trans, original 400 CID engine, original Q-jet, and original distributor with ignition points. This car, on the highway, consistently gets over 20 mpg at 75-85 mph....the usual is 21, and my best so far is 23 mpg when I kept it under 75 for a 100+ mile leg of a weekend trip. In town, not so much. For good gas mileage you need decent compression (the OP is leaving some power and economy on the table with 10:1 and aluminum heads), a matched camshaft and induction system(Holley's are great for power, kind of crude at metering for max economy), and a mapped out ignition curve with vacuum advance. With a 3.70 rear gear, my bet is that the fuel economy would go waaaay up if the cruising speed was held at 55-60 mph. Dropping in a 3.08 gear would help a bunch, too.

Why are you attempting to ruin things?

The best crowd that gathers to look at my cars, are usually when I am getting gas! The more stops the better! It is like attending an impromptu car show at every fill up!

PS are you shifting to neutral to coast down the hills?

Not quite.

So, let's level the playing field. I assume everyone here can do the math. If not, then here it is:

Fuel mileage is a direct proportion to engine RPMs at any speed

multiply 25 MPG by .67 to get the mileage at 1:1

answer: 16.75 MPG @ 75 MPH, 3.70 axle, 4th gear 1:1, HOT ROD HARRY 327 making 485 HP, 200 ft-lbs @ 2000 RPM, 750 CFM DP, 248/256 duration.

OK, here's my real experience from Thursday. Did 282 miles on a road trip for the Veteran Home. I used 13.5 gallons of 89 octane = 20.8 mpg. The original (rebuilt with 115K miles now) engine...331ci 9.75 CR, 151 cam, Hedman headers, performance ignition, Edelbrock Performer intake, Edelbrock 625AFB, Muncie 3:36, and 215/70/15 tires. I cruise at approximately 2250=55, 2500=60, 2900=69. You can add performance partsand expect good performance with good gas milage. Dennis

Hot Cam Guy, I'd really appreciate hearing exactly how your 383 and holley is set up. Jetting, timing, vacuum or not etc. Your setup is exactly the same combination I am running on my 66. I tried to PM you but your inbox is full.

My diesel pusher got 13 mpg running a steady 60 mph but it was only a 34 footer!
