Default Shifter install problem

1964 327-300 4 speed with a muncie shifter.

Trying to reinstall my stock muncie shifter I ran into a problem. When I attach the linkage and go inside to bolt the shifter to the trans, the shift handle is pointing all the way back (like toward 2 or 4 gear) nearly touching the tunnel.

I did everything I was supposed to do, put the trans in neutral, put the shifter in neutral and used my home made tool to keep it in place, I even read old posts that describe how to do it. From the posts, it appears I'm doing right but I end up in the same position every time. I feel like I'm missing something.

BTW, I installed the shifter the same was once before and had no issue. Is it a case of trial and error or am I doing something wrong.

Thanks for the help.

do you have the shifter assembly bolted to the right set of holes on the side of the tailshaft housing?

bolt the shifter up first and attach the linkage after so the linkage can be moved out of the way if I'm understanding your problem correctly

I have the shifter bolted in but there was only one bolt when I took it out.

Like I stated above, when I connect the linkage to the trans, the shifter is all the way down and it doesn't shift at all.

Bill, the last 2 holes on the tail are for the shifter housing?

If you're using the early triangular mount plate, it's the last three holes, two on top, one at the bottom.
