Default inner fender indetation 1965: johnz or nowhere man?

while going through my parts i have several inner fenders that came with my car, aot of extra fiberglass. the PO dad owned a body shop in the day and he threw in all the crashed peices.. any way, i noticed that there is a small square indentation too the left of the grill mount brackets on the pass inner fender. but i have another pass side that does not have it? whats the deal? same goes for the driver side...

i do not have a pic of that area on my car too look at to compare with. i was just sorting threw stuff and thought i would pick your brains..thanks troy

If my memory serves me correctly...this area is for the grille molding trim that were used on the 1963 and 1964 Corvettes. The 1965 did not have them BUT the 1965 I believe still used the inner skirt that has those areas you are commenting on. The 1966 and 1967 has a different inner skirt and I think they are not there. I have so many things I have to try to remember...I think I got this one correct.

You're asking the wrong people. Well, JohnZ might know.
the indent is what DUB says it is.
here is shot of inner panel where you can just make out the indent above the far right grille bracket on Jan 64 coupe. The indent gives room for grille opening molding screw.

thank you! very cool!! now my next Q is, when was the cut off time frame in production? the biggest reason im going through all these pieces is, a buddy needs a set of inner fenders for his 65 witch came off the line basically the same week as mine.. but as normal with my body guy his shop is locked up tighter then a drum and he is off camping for god knows how long! [see my body man post earlier last month] so i cannot look at my car to compare. and i have both styles with and with out. his body guy is chomping at the bit too get them asap. go figure! thanks for the great picture ...troy

You're welcome. Good luck learning the cut off date.
My June 65 car is not near me but I'm sure the indent is not present.
To be safe sell your buddy the non-indent parts, unless he has a very early 65 car.

both your cars are 8 or 9 months into about 11 months of production. I don't call them early. Early would be Sept/ Oct/ Nov 64.
go with the no indent parts.

QUESTION:

Have you looked into or contacted the judging forces that would take points off if they were wrong. They might know the exact serial number of the car where the inner skirts stopped having the recess.

You know it also me be possible that one side has a recess and one side does not due to parts left over. Who knows....as we all know when it came to production...many things can change and NOT be has they seem.

The St. Louis Body on s116538 does not have such indentations.

Page 80 of my "new" NCRS judging guide does not seem to mention, at least not in the Exterior section.

My guess is a "model year" change request was made, due to the timing of the grille change. That document probably allowed use of old inventory "until used up". (I don't have the correct GM terminology for this, but there were such options listed on the change request form.) If my guess is near correct, the inventory would have been long gone before Christmas of 1964.

I wonder how many got the feature on one side and not the other?

well in my ignorance with production times i forget that yes my car as a L78 is a early car. and when i look at other cars i use my april car as a early car comparison overall. when in reality its not, they where making 65s and selling them in late 64. midvette and one other person here pointed that out too me! dumb a-- me! we figured out our dilemma with the inner fenders. my body guy was at the shop wed and i could look at mine. both smooth by the way, as they should be! so i sold my buddy a set of smooth inners for his car and he is on his way again..thank you all for the eye opener, you put things back in perspective for me....troy
