Default 66 Radiator

Do you have to remove the hood to get to the shroud and radiator bolts?

, I assume by your question you are removing the rad. So, removing the hood makes it all much easier and when you do it, have a helper. Dennis

How do you get to the shroud bolts with the hood on?

My bolt heads are on the bumper side not in the engine bay. Sounds like it must have been installed by a shade tree mechanic when the hold was off.

The shroud on my '64 is bolted from the bumper side. I was able to snake one hand in the gap between the hood and front panel and unscrew the bolts with a 1/4in drive short ratchet. It was a bit of a tedious process since there wasn't much room to swing the wrench, but it wasn't all that tough.

No your right. Why I posted that I don't know. But you should still be able to get it with a 1/4" drive ratchet

Got the two out as the two lower were missing and the shroud is missing in the lower half.

Repair the shroud or buy another one?

I am really not great with fiberglass, etc.

Who make the best reproduction shroud I can just bolt on?

I am not sure who really makes them but I would look into Shermishines(sp) or Corvette Image. or find a local body shop or boat repair place and see who can fix it

The prices here may help to convince you to have your current shroud repaired...if possible.

Well I was told the shrouds were 6-8 back order item. So I put it back on with only the two top nuts as I wanted to see what improvement the DeWitts radiator produced that I just installed.

Hot day in the high 90's:

Down the interstate 195
Stop & go Traffic 215

Stop & go traffic before the radiator was 245

Something I can live with

Thanks for the help!

The new radiator SHOULD help however, if you're missing 1/2 the shroud (much less having it sealed around the housing) you'll most likely still be running hot.

I can't stress enough how important that shroud is. That and, the seal around it, play an EXTREMELY important part concerning your cooling system.

Instead of the air passing THROUGH that new radiator it will be passing AROUND it!

If you don't want to fix yours and, don't want to spend too much, Corvette Central has a hand laid replacement for $180.00.

Fix it properly! My .02

Gary

There are seals for the shroud? I have a 66 non AC car.

The shroud is all there except for the two bottom flanges where the two lower bolts attach to J-bolts.

As do I however, if you wish to get the most out of your radiator you want as much air flow as is possible going through, not around it.

No, the non AC cars didn't come stock with the seals. That said, it still helps and, God knows these cars need all the help they can get, to seal all the way around the radiator and shroud.

It's cheap and easy. Just use some 1"X1" self adhesive backed weather stripping. It WILL make a difference!

Just an after thought. Pulling the existing fan shroud back far enough to install a radiator was challenging, I basically ran out of room.

Just how do you remove one completely and install a replacement shroud?

Are they installed in three, (3) pieces and bonded in the engine bay?
This is definitely on my list in the future.
