Default '63 Disc Brake Conversion

HI Folks,

I plan on converting my stock front drum brakes to disc. Who would you recommend to buy from? I'll be looking for a "Simple" conversion with a dual master cyl set up.

There's talk about "Offsets" that occur of 3/4" - 1" on ea. Side. Is that normal? Does the offset create any interference / clearance problems in turning / steering on a stock wheel well car?

Thanx in advance,

Russ

Some of the vendors carry a set-up that uses C3 Corvette parts, this is the system I used (from Vansteel) on my '63 and have no wheel/tire clearance issues at all. It's definitely more expensive, but I felt it was worth it.

Keep in mind, you'll still need to to modify/change the master cylinder to achieve a dual set-up. This is the Vansteel set-up for non-power brakes.

Good luck... GUSTO

Great info folks,

I like the -0- Offset sound. They also sound & appear to be of good Quality.

Thanx Again,

Russ

A cheap way to go is to find someone parting out a C3 or find one in a junk yard and get everything you need and the rest at your local auto parts store

I dunno - that eBay kit looks pretty complete for a killer price....and all new parts.

I don't see a proportioning valve but assume conversions will need one - the ad doesn't say...

I believe the stock 63 steel wheels will not work with disc brakes.
I would do a forum search to confirm.

The ebay ad seems to imply it will work with stock wheels but explicitly says knock offs will not work. Who knows ?

$1300.00 for the van steel kit is way too expensive. You can get the wilwood conversion for around 750-800. That is what I installed on our 63.

The front wheels only I assume ?
Most don't want to get into dealing with the rear wheels and parking brake mess..

I used a set up from ABS Power Brakes on the west coast on my 63. It worked fine with my bolt-on knockoffs and had 1/4-3/8" offset, so no rubbing. They offer power or non power with dual master.

I decided to go with this front disc conversion kit for my '64, mainly for the zero offset feature. This kit is very well made and good quality, IMO. All necessary parts to complete the installation are included. The ebay ad states that KO wheels won't work with this kit........yes and no. The wheels on my car are the CA bolt on style KO wheels. There were no interference issues, the kit fit like a glove using these wheels.

The KO wheel interference problem appears to occur with true style KO wheels. From the info of happymike who installed this kit using true KO wheels, there is a clearance issue with the hub end fitting into the KO wheel adapter. Mike said the hub end needed to taper down slightly more to fit into the adapter. Mike said he used a hand held grinder to taper down the hub end, about 1/8 inch. Easy fix.

I believe the ebay vendor of this conversion kit used to modify the hub end to accommodate KO wheels, but no longer does so.

Some pics of the kit, post 69.

Been mentioned several times, but the only issue I had with the eBay kit was they supply no-name Chinese bearings that I replaced with Timken.

It also uses generic D52 calipers which I am sure work fine, but I used a Wilwood replacement. Would be cool if he sold the hubs, brackets and hardware separate and you could bring your own calipers !

My mechanic friend says go for the Ebay kit. I'm going to call about the valve & dual master, if he offers a "Complete" kit. I didn't see any of these parts in his other items & or store.

I'm wondering if the "Rotor" is a stock or modified item & still maintain the -0- offset.

The rotors I got seemed to be off the shelf parts, I think I looked up the part number and it was off the rear of a Pontiac ! The key to the zero offset is that the hubs are custom machined and the brackets locate the caliper correctly.
