As a note to the OP, early 65's did not have the plastic seat belt retainers.

Also, all '65s came with the plastic holder between the seat and the door
From what I've read I don't believe this is correct - my '65 is very early (#236) and didn't have the holders when I bought the car. Car is mostly original, esp interior. NCRS and (I believe) Noland Adams say that the holders were not present on early '65. Ditto w/ the retraction mechanism that the OP is asking about. May not be of any relevance to the OP - don't know what date your car is.

Early 65's did not have the plastic retainer on the inboard or ourboard side.

Birthdate of the car is June 14, 1965. Are you talking about that plastic sleeve about 6" long?

Yes, by June they would have had the plastic sleeves.

IIRC what I read, the plastic holders started showing up after #500, so sometime in early September

My '65s birth date is June 1, 1965.

By then, they all had the plastic holders.

Still helping my friend with his 65, and the clutch is slipping big time! We tried adjusting it but to no avail. It's obvious the clutch rod has been altered, but don't think that has anything to do with it. Anybody see anything wrong in the pic? I never saw a bellhousing like this one. Is this typical of BB's?

Looks like an old Lakewood scatter shield, not a stock Chevrolet BB bellhousing.

Welcome to the fun unravelling mysteries of 50 years being modded and hotrodded !

My 64 has had some great examples, but clearly someone had taken its lap belts out and then someone else had reinstalled them by drilling holes straight in the floor and using 4 different bolts with large washers underneath.

All this time the factory mounting points were sitting hidden full of dirt so I cleaned them out and reinstalled using correct hardware from one of the Corvette retailers !

The worn out linkage isn't helping anything.

How difficult is it to remove this scatter shield and replace the clutch?

Normal deal. Drop the driveshaft, remove the transmission and linkage, unbolt the bellhousing, etc, etc.

Okay, he thinks he wants to get rid of this scatter shield and go back to a regular bell housing at the same time the clutch is replaced. He thinks the clutch set will be less expensive also and result in less stiff leg action. He's not going to race it. Is the bell housing for a BB the same as a SB? Exactly what bellhousing and clutch fork, etc. does he need for this 65 BB?

'65 BB (L-78, 396/425hp) used bellhousing casting number 3858403 or 3840383, same as '65 small-blocks; that's because the '65 L-78 used the small 10.5" clutch on a lightweight 12-3/4" 153-tooth flywheel (same as the '67-'69 L-88). Other big-blocks used the 444 or 621 bellhousing, in order to accommodate the larger 14" 168-tooth flywheel and 11" clutch those engines used.

RatDog,
Just looking thru some old threads about seatbelts and came across your pics.
Great idea on the headrest add and 3 point seat belts. Just wondering if GM had provisioned any mounting points for the retractor way back then or do I have to weld a plate in place with a mounting nut? Hate to have to start welding on a completed restoration. (hindsight.....). Also, can I ask where you obtained your headrests?
Thanking you in advance.....Pat

If I may ask, my retractor mechanism no longer works. This thread is the closest thing I found. Is there a thread/video on how to re-insert the spring and correct this issue? Thx, Sully

hello Sully
this is not a good thread to post this in since the title says nothing, and the posts are all over the map, BUT, your answer is here, and probably in many other places on the web.
